Plot: The story is set two decades after a cordyceps-type fungus has killed millions, with nature gradually retaking the abandoned cities and towns. The survivors are hemmed inside quarantine zones, completely under the heel of the United States military, with order and screening for any Infected being viciously maintained under martial law. Joel, a hardened black-marketeer within one of the quarantine zones, goes through an event which makes him promise an old friend that he will get a young, fourteen year old girl named Ellie, away from the harsh regime to a resistance group known as the Fireflies. They begin a journey through the USA, avoiding the Infected, humanoid creatures whose sole aim has become spreading the fungal infection. Joel and Ellie also have to avoid scavengers that survive outside the quarantine zones who see Joel and Ellie as their latest prey. Adding to their problems, the military is determined to find Ellie and bring her back under their power.

Ahh... Another post apocalypse extravaganza... I'm sure it's nothing but a reflection of society's general moral decline and the loss of hope for humanity as we know it; that's why games such as this seem to have perpetual resonance. In that vein, we also have:

They aren't zombies (sorry for spoiling), the infected are based on Cordyceps, fungus that takes over the minds of insects.

The game plays like Resident Evil mixed with Uncharted, its much slower paced, and NOT recommended to go all gun ho on enemies. It's also quite emotional, right from the get go.

Visually, the game is quite beautiful to look at, again, its visually like Uncharted, but seeing how mother nature reclaim over human established lands is beautiful.

The characters, wow! The little girl is instantly likable, and I don't think so far (I'm pretty much half way into the game) there isn't a character I didn't like, and each character have their reason to be who they are. As with Uncharted, the interactions between characters during game play keeps the game alive. The character give the plot an incredible about of emotional depth.

The controls take time to get used to, feels like Resident Evil.

Its not 10/10, but its a masterpiece of a game. Naughty Dog did it again.

Heard the stealth gameplay is pretty draggish and it's like a huge escort quest. Besides that the story's pretty good apparently. I'll wait for this to hit the bargain bin.

I can't think of a game that naughty dog has put out that I don't like.

That said I'm kind of cash poor atm and I'll also be waiting for this to drop in price significantly before biting the bullet.

It does sound like a masterpiece, but it also sounds like the kind of game that will hit the bargain bin fast, especially once PS4 comes out.

The game's premise is rather old hat. A disease is destroying mankind, while a child that has resistance to the infection must be saved and brought to real scientists so that they may come up with a solution to save mankind (I am Legend, anyone?). Despite the dated scenario, it remains an intriguing game experience.

I just completed the run to the Capitol building; now past the subway station into the woods and just past the fence into the next area. Anyone else playing this? Toughest area for me thus far was the history museum. Oh, and save often. The auto save feature seems to have an annoying habit of saving only from the beginning of a fight sequence. So if you're 95% done with a real tough fight and get killed near the end, the autosave will restart you from the just before the battle; ie. you have to do that 95% all over again. So during an extended fight, if you can duck into a relatively quiet area for a few moments, do so and save your game. That way, you won't have to reload an entire fight if you misstep near the end of tough round.

This is a really good game, but I already found a monumental peeve; that is, the artificial "limitations" that it puts on the inventory. You're limited in terms of the number of total bullets that you can carry. No, I'm not talking about six million rounds, but rather something ridiculous like 18 (for the pistol). Heck, in real life you can buy a box of 50 rounds as standard supply. The common criminal or terrorist usually carry about 1000, but this game only allows you a pissable amount. One of these days, I just wish game writers would allow you to collect as much inventory as possible. Another thing is, there seems to be very little in terms of salvage from soldiers. If anything, you should be collect guns and ammo from dead enemy, just like in real life. And the whole idea that one can make a first aid kit from rags and alcohol, or heal oneself immediately from eating canned food, is laughable. But yes, I understand it's only a game. So what I don't understand is, why NaughtyDog decided that 18 rounds should be the maximum that one can carry for a revolver. Sure you get more guns as the game progresses, but the ammunition count is never really any prize winner.

Oh, and BTW, if you want to have a really funny encounter, at the beginning of the game, try to talk to a soldier; when he brushes you off, be insistent and approach him again; it's worth a laugh ;)

I'm at Pittsburgh, I realized I forgot to get the hunting rifle at the Capitol Building (I did pick it up, but I died trying to go gun ho on the soldiers so I lost it and never picked it up again).

The Clickers make this game intense and is probably the reason you don't go Rambo in this game.

I also didn't understand why they didn't pick up the Solider's machine guns during a cut scene early in the game...

Yes indeed, them 'Clickers' are ferocious. They also don't die very easily requiring multiple shots (even head shots don't seem to kill them); the only way to kill them with one hit is to sneak up and shiv them in the neck (a very dangerous proposition). Unfortunately, the game doesn't give xp for killing them and each time you use a shiv, it's lost. They rarely even drop anything. So it's better to avoid them altogether by sneaking away and going around them if you can. I agree that Rambo style play is almost useless in this game.

Towards the end of the game (if you watched any of the walkthroughs available now on Youtube) you can actually pick up assault rifles, bows, flame throwers, shotguns, and variety of pistols. However, there seems to be the same ammo limitation on each weapon. Instead of allowing you to accummulate a lot of ammunition for each type of weapon, the game eventually allows you to access to an entire arsenal but only with very minimal load outs. IMHO, as for the hunting rifle, you should have kept it as it has a lot more range, power and is easier to aim than the pistols.

Another thing that I'd noticed was that if you sneak up on someone and strangle him, the guy next to him hears nothing of the struggle, even as the first guy is groaning and thrashing about as you kill him.

    -what?

I'm still halfway through Borderlands 2, but dropped it in a second to play Last of Us; I had been waiting for this for the longest, LOL...

Oh and on another note, just a bad news FYI for everyone regarding this game; apparently there has been some issues with the Auto Save Game feature where when it goes on line to check something, it reportedly wipes out your save game files (or some such). The info is all a bit confusing as some people claim that the problem was resolved and some say that the problem is still there. It seems that if your PS3 goes on line while you play the auto save somehow locks mid save and ruins your files. I'm not sure of the exact tech nature of it, but just wanted to broadcast to others to be aware that there is something going on.

ADDENDUM: Just read a few blogs talking about Last Of Us and a DLC planned for this game; reportedly, the rumors are the DLC would contain new skins, along with the ability to save more ammunition. SERIOUSLY? The players who would go and get the DLC would be the hard core types who, frankly don't need the extra ammo capacity to begin with. The ones that lament the small amounts of carried munitions are guys like me. I'm a tourist who plays the game just to ooh and ahh at the beautiful scenery, oh... and to shoot things on occasion too. Naughty Dog is being true to its name; lowering itself to pander for a few dollars more just so people can have save more ammo. Like OMG, what an extraordinary feature so special that I will spend an additional excess $20 on besides the basic game cost.

Further, after all the talk about having very little ammunition in this game, I've already lost count of the times I've bypassed ammo because my inventory was "full" according to the game.

The interesting thing about this is the rarely spoken of multi-player aspect of this game. Supposedly, the game can be used by multi-player teams along the same lines of other FPS combat games. This would obviously make it much more enticing to those types of players, who arguably really want the action and don't care about story line; albeit one needs to have a lot more tactical strategy in order to survive.
