The extraordinary revelation that the north London football club counts the monarch amongst its fans was made to midfielder Cesc Fabregas at a Palace reception for the team in February, the Sun reported today. The 81-year-old monarch revealed she has been watching the side play for 50 years “It seems the Queen follows football and she told us she was an Arsenal fan. She appeared to definitely know who I was and we exchanged a few special words,” said Fabregas. Her support comes as a surprise given football is a game of masses and not the upper classes. The royal family is much more accustomed to sports such as shooting, fishing, hunting, polo and the king of sports, horse-riding. It is known that younger members of the family follow the sport - both Princes William and Harry have been pictured on the terraces. Prince Harry is also a long standing Arsenal fan although Prince William gives his support to Birmingham’s Aston Villa. Manager Arsene Wenger and the football stars were invited to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen after she was forced to pull out of opening their new stadium because of a bad back.
