Marco Polo – 13th century Italian explorer, or 13th century Italian pizza thief?
good laughs... Marco Polo got some ideas from Asia but their was already some type of pasta made in Italy already. The pizza as we know it today is from Italy but before that, there are food that are similar in shape and have other ingredients with/in it. Some people love to claim they are the origin of a lot of things. And they just might be on to something...those Koreans... When I ate Korean food and have a few drinks, my vomit does look like pizza.
Back when I was taking Mandarin class, my old teacher who was in her 60s told us veerry long time ago somewhere in southern (or was it northern) China there was a group of people who would make something really close to pizza. Not sure if this is true or not.
Domino's better watch out, especially with the free garlic bread deal, LOL... Seriously though, the idea of a flatbread covered, coated or filled with something gastronomically complimentary is ubiquitous; it's done the world over in one fashion or another ever since the idea of bread. One irate person with a cultural ax to grind not withstanding, IMHO, I don't think Italians have to worry about giving up this iconic food asset.
