Just updating my CV (Resume as some like to call it) cause im applying for a new job. Having a hard time finding stuff to write. Apart from Name, address, contact details Education, Skills, work experience Interests, achievements and references what else is there to write on your CV??? Or what else would look good on your CV??? Im trying to fit 2 pages. Just got a bit of empty space here and there i need to fill. Dont like using large fonts. Times New Roman, size 12 is the best!!! Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Post a picture? A good one. No matter what they say, people do judge you by your looks, especially if you'll be working with people.
I gota say, having a picture of urself on ur CV is a BAD idea!!! Especially if ur not living in your home country. It could lead to discrimination. They can see what you look like when you go for an interview.
actually this depends some countries, it's quite normal to have your picture some countries it's reguarded as a no no so this more fits to the enviorment you are in PROJECTS, that is my suggestion whatever field you are in, if you've had experiance, maybe from school list a projects catagory
Maybe your personal life goals and explain why you want to work there and why you think you are the best candidate for this job?
It really depends on where you are. I used to do hiring for my company in NY. Its common practice here to have a 1 page resume. Anytime I see a 2 page resume, I would throw it away. The reason i throw away the resume is if you need 2 pages to impress me with your skills, then you're probably not good enough. If you still need more stuff to fill your 2 page resume, maybe add in projects you have done that might have relevance with the job you are applying to. I tend to tailor my resume to each job I'm applying to, but I never really need to write a resume.
well this is one of those regional things I've been job hunting up and down the west coast of USA and Canada in Vancouver area, they expect a 2 page resume in washington they expect 1 page in california they expect a resume 1 or 2 pages, and depending on what type of job, than a cd
oh another suggestion, (what kind of job are you looking for) having a portfolio can be nice of the projects you have done a website is always impressive too
Really in California? I have friends that live in San Fran and LA and they said in the past that they write 1 page resume only. Actually almost everywhere in US is a 1 page resume.
Yes a website is impressive especially if you are in the media industry. Some jobs ask you for a website as one of the requirement.
@Masterjin: You have basically covered all the important details that should be listed in a good CV. Just don't forget to submit an impressive and courteous cover letter together with the CV -^_^
Thanks everyone. All good suggestions. In the UK ive seen ppl who have 5 pages for their resume. LOL. Anyone watch The Apprentice should know. They have detailed descriptions of what skills they've learnt and what experience they've had, what qualifications they've earnt etc etc. The number of pages also depends on your age. If you are in school, most likely you will have a 1 page CV (cause you are just about to start looking for work, n ur CV will most likely include your grades from school and interests n hobbies). For college, i'd say 2 pages, cause you have a bit more to write like why you chose your A Levels, what you want to be when ur older etc etc. University level should be 2-3 pages, listing the modules you have done, what uve learnt, what skills uve gained n maybe add some more work experience. For ppl who have been switching jobs every now and then, they will prolly have around 3+ pages. I think 2 is enough for me. I think i'll add some projects that ive done, ive also created a short website back in college, i think i should add that as well. I havent listed my goals. LOL. Thats prolly the 1st thing i should hv put down. Duh!!!! Silly me. Thanks again everyone 4 ur help!!! Laters everyone!!! -coolio P.S. Babyrain, i ike ur Avatar. Looks cool. LOL
^I don't list down my goals I only talk about them during interviews...(if they ask you) It's preferable if you keep some info, or else you have nothing to talk about during ur interview... haha.
5 pages are you kidding me -shock...gnor wun la.......as for the amount of pages......surely thats more like a general guideline....... hehehe i watched the apprentice velly velly good
Yes 5 page is way too long. When recruiters are looking through hundreds of resume, they rather read 1 or 2 page than 5 pages. They want to know in the fastest way if you are qualified.
well its normal for some people to have a "master" resume and the "other" resume master u put EVERYTHING in, every detail that u have done etc then wen applying for a certain job, u just select the relevant and important aspects generally speaking, no more than 2-3 pages for an application, as usually the hr dont' read much more than that... unless its exceptional and captivating heheeh as long as its different and not the "generic" stuff that every1 puts down, then it gets remembered! so it is preferable u have something in there, that not many other ppl do =) ive kept mine at 3 pages (with the last page essentially just references and their details)
