Tipping

Discussion in 'The Rant Section' started by surfingatmidnight, Mar 9, 2005.

  1. Here is something that has been annoying me lately. Is tipping getting out of control in north America? It seems like everywhere I go people expect to get tips for doing their jobs. taxi drivers, barbers, bartenders, coffee shops, etc. It seems a little crazy that I should tip a bartender for pouring me a beer, or for just reaching into a refrigerator and handing a bottle to me. Anyone else getting tired of tipping everyone else in the world? I don;t mind tipping someone for doing an exceptional job, but why should I be expected to tip someone who is just doing the job they signed up for?

in korea, if you tip that means they did something wrong and you are giving them pity money. same here too. i think. korean places, dont expect tips. or at least thats what i was told, and have been doing.

in todays society...everybody is out to make money....to obsessed with material things..however.....waitors/waitress i belive should recieve tips...and there are other expections out there...but..for those exceptions..it should be up to the discretion of the person..eg...taxi driver....

I think the idea of tipping has become a trend. It reveals that you are wealthy if you can tip a large quantity. Business men do it all the time. Haven't you noticed that? I did

i feel that tipping is out of control. i dont work i go to school i have to pay for my school so why should i be needed to tip? i mean there should be exceptions to people who are poorer or just as poor. i can really spare money not even a dollar!

    very true.
plus we are in North AMerica... Its a big Consumer society that has alot of emphasis on consumption... look at our huge SUV's and giant suburban houses.

Another thing is that here in North America servers get paid really low wages because food is priced lower and therefore you make up for the wages with tips.

Where as in other countries the employee's pay and cost are implemented into the cost of the meal

eg. a steak dinner in canada is 14.99 <---- that $3 less is up to you if you wanna give a tip
a steak dinner in England is 17.99 <--- that extra $3 is actually paying the server

its also a tactic to make ppl work harder...

yea i really do think you should only tip when you are served past a certain amount of time. say like...waitors, and not stuff like, pouring a drink.i was actually surprised when i found out people tip at tim hortons

  10. I agree that food servers should get a tip even though it is at the point where I do not think it entices them to work harder. I used to work at starbucks, and we had a little tip jar out and I would just laugh when other employees would get pissed because people were not leaving tips. I admit, it was nice to get some cash at the end of the week, but unless I was making a very specific drink for a customer, all I was really doing was pouring some coffee. And the best job I ever had was at a restaurant once I worked in the coat check room for the night. So the owner told me to put a basket out and I should always keep a few dollars in there, never too full and never empty. I ended up making like $100 just for sitting in a room and watching people's coats. sorry to ramble on

Dont worry about it. You dont have to tip if you dont feel like it. I mean... I only tip if I felt like the waiter/ waitress did their best effort to make it a good eat out for me...

Shoot... its your money... I mean... its ok to spend it the way you want but... you dont have to tip ALL the time.

    Be free.

on the the subject of tipping it's more about going out with a group of friends. When it comes to splitting the bill. Someone or some person always manages to go cheap and not even a leave a tip. This only means someone else has to cover it......sorry my pet peeve

I agree. Tipping should be left to the customer. If he or she feels like you did a good job and deserves a tip then good for you. People shouldn't be expecting to get a tip. You're lucky to get extra money at all so don't complain.

    waiters and bartenders deserve it.
In Canada employers are legally entitled to pay Liquor servers a wage that is considerably less then minimum wage.
I think minimum wage for bartenders right now is $6.15 compared to $7.45 for a non liquor server.

I don't tip anyone unless it's after eating in a resturant where I'll tip 15% of my meal. If I hate the service, I'll give less tip than I should. I am stingy like that. I don't like to give tip to people who don't deserve it.

i dont like how some restaurants already include a tip in the bill because sometimes they would automatically give a tip of about 15-20%. Which is quite high imo, and the staff would take a looong time with our foods.

I definitely agree with you there, surfingatmidnight. I especially hate it more when you are "forced" to tip, even for bad service, because nowadays, tipping is programmed into those interac machines. Or evenmore, some restaurants add that 10%/15% gratitude on the bills by themselves! :@

I think all my friends thinks that I am such a cheap tipper, because I seriouly only want to tip what I think its worth. Some places, the waiters donte even get the tip. Maybe a tipping cheat sheet will come in handy, haha.
