-unsure I have an ABC friend who works primarily in a company full of Chinese people. Because he's an ABC who cannot speak Chinese, they constantly remind him of this by asking him if he drinks soda. When he says he doesn't, they make comments that all ABCs drink soda. When my friend does drop a few Chinese words here and there, everyone gets so surprised and asks him how does he do that, etc. He feels like he is not part of "the group" in the company. I think it's at the point where he feels that being an ABC is bothering him. Should he stand up to these people and ask them to stop stereotyping?
i think its totally pathetic how his workmates treat him. if the does the job well and can still communicate with them, then itsall good. if the workmates don't know English.. psht to them. how long has he been working there though? if it's been a while and they still do that... doesn't it get boring?
If he is chinese and cannot speak chinese, it is insulting to the other chinese in his work place, coz well let me put it this way its like denying your own identity by not learning the language . He was too busy blending in with the western culture that he did not bother to learn his own language. To tell the truth it can actually be very embaressing even insulting to the other chinese in his work place. Look at the positive side, this treatment that you (powerz) say he is getting at his work place might push him to learn his language. Why take it so seriously anyway, if the best bullying his colleaguess could do was about drinking soda. Pleeeeeeeeeasse COME ON !!!!!!!!!!!
well they should discriminate(?) against him just cause he cant speak the language, but then again most chinese people i know are like that if you cant speak chinese you will be segregated a bit, hell, the cantonese HK people and madarin mainland people here dont mix at all
not all ABC drink soda. i'm a ABC and i don't drink soda. ur friend should stand up for himself. teach him sum insulting words and have him say it to his co-workers
He can look at it as being the unique one in the company. He shouldn't feel inferior. Afterall, the company DID hire him, so they must have seen useful qualifications in his application. Every time they mock his ABC stereotype, he could mock one of their fob stereotypes. He could pick out the best looking girl amongst his fob coworkers, and start dating her just to spite the other fob guys. Personally, I would ignore the rest of them, and just strive to get promoted until I were in charge of all of them; I 'm sure the mockery would stop then.
aAHhHAhahaa.. thas the same with me. First time I ever meet n talk to people in Chinese they're surprised at how much Chinese I know... and I'm NOT even ABC... xD. Funny thing is though.. I was drinking a soda when I was reading this... -lol
That's mean they shouldn't discrminate him cuz he can't speak Chinese as long as he's doing his job that's all that matter.
I think he is too sensitive for his own good. If he is really upset, either tell those idiots or igore them. I do not see the point of making up by learning Chinese AT ALL. As long as he is still productive, his boss won't fire him because he doesn't chit-chat with his colleagues.
