In California you need to take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course in order for you recieve you license. Also if you pass the course you recieve a waiver for the riding test. Luckily I took the course a couple months before they doubled the rates. FYI you pay for the course not for your license.
I would recommend the EX250. They are the perfect for beginners. Sure they aren't the as nice as R6's, GSXR's, and CBR's but when you first start you are bound to drop it. Also the 250 will allow you to focus on you entry speed, lines, and throttle control without having to worry about kicking the rear out. Many people who ride litre bikes and 600cc bikes still can't ride the 250 to its full potential. There is one guy who is imfamous around my area who rides a yellow 250 ninja. He is able to pass 95% of the riders on the road when it starts getting twisty. However he gets passed during the straigt aways but he always catch up and passes later on. Another excellent bike to start from if the 250 isn't you style is the SV650S. Its bigger than the EX250 and its styling is closer to a modern sportbikes. You lean forward more than the 250 and put a bit more weight on your arms. Since its a V-twin the bike as loads of torque, which is perfect for the street. You get power all over from low to high rpm. Plus the power delivery is fairly linear and predictable. It shares many qualites with the 250 in which it teaches you the necessary skills to become skilled rider. By far this is one of my favorite bikes after rider for almost 5 years. I have had friends who pull up with their race replicas and superbikes asking why I still ride a 5 year old bike and their bikes are producing over 20 hp over than me. I never answer but they know why when I pull away in the backroads. -scooter Its best to try sit on a couple bikes first at the dealership to get a feel then buy used. Also get a friend who will show the lines and proper riding techniques. In anycase make sure to buy your basic gear first ie. Helmet, jacket, and gloves. As you continue your riding career you'll start accumulate more gear. Now I have 1 jacket, 2 pairs of boots, gloves, and helmet, and 1 and 2 piece suits. Oh if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area consider joining www.bayarearidersforum.com and use craigslist to find a good deal on a motorcycle. When do you think you'l start riding?
i started on a gsxr 750... then i rode my friends r6 and feel in love with it. true its best to start with something like a 250. i think i take turns pretty good, but not the best i want to be. i'm not balls to the walls. i have a friend who is selling his black 04 600rr for 6000 obo if intersted.
"When do you think you'l start riding?" im getting my m1 L's this friday...... taking the permit even though if dont pass i still can get it for 70 bucks cuase friend is working there...... so probaly begining of next year = D
