Even though only half of The Confidant <大太監> has been aired, viewers are already speculating the ending for various characters. With reports of two endings to be aired and leaked spoilers, the characters’ fates in the drama are becoming more apparent.

It is already widely reported that there will be an alternate ending revolving around palace maid, Sin Yung (Nancy Wu 胡定欣). There are currently three scenarios floating around. Sin Yung may end up murdered, remarried, or a nun.

As the most loyal servant to Empress Dowager Cixi (Michelle Yim 米雪), Li Lianying’s (Wayne Lai 黎耀祥) speculated fate is to stand by her until her death, and will continue to live in the palace until he dies. However, there is also a more historically accurate ending in which he will be murdered after leaving the palace at an old age. The viewers will most likely see the more sentimental ending showing Lianying’s loyalty to Cixi, as the second version requires the series to get into more detail at the end.

Empress Dowager Ci’an (Maggie Siu 邵美琪) will lose everything in her power struggle with Empress Dowager Cixi. Ci’an will become insane and most likely end up “imprisoned” in the cold palace. Although according to history, Ci’an was the co-de-facto ruler until she, despite her good health, died of a sudden stroke in 1881.

An Dehai (Raymond Cho 曹永廉), close confidant of Empress Dowager Cixi, will lose his head. Later on in the series, An Dehai will become blatantly arrogant and lawless. He will also constantly turn Cixi against Prince Kung (Cheung Kwok Keung 張國強).

As to the actual reason why An Dehai was executed, history has it that An, the most feared grand eunuch of the imperial court, was beheaded for leaving the palace (eunuchs were forbidden to travel out of the Forbidden Palace without permission). It was also said that the incident was carried out by a province governor after being hinted by Prince Kung who had the support of Ci’an.

Princess Wo Shek (Aimee Chan 陳茵媺) and Yiu Sheung Hei (Raymond Wong 黃浩然) will part ways. The princess will marry a general far away at the border of China, and live a life of a commoner there after. Sheung Hei will finally fulfill his family’s dream of becoming the imperial doctor.
