I've been getting mixed opinions about getting a phone unlocked. What are yours? Is it possible, and if so, how?

I like the freedom of an unlocked phone. Since I get a new phone every year or so, having unlocked phones around is much more useful to useful as backup phones for anyone using GSM service (family, friends, etc who may not use the same service).

If the phone is branded by the service carrier (i.e. Cingular, T-mobile, etc), the easiest way to get your phone unlocked is to call your service provider. They'll need a reason, I always say "I'm leaving the country for a business trip (or vacation) and I'd like to use my phone with a prepaid service there". I say this because a "because I want to change providers and still use my phone" will get you a "we're not unlocking your phone" response :p

There's 4 main GSM bands (frequencies) throughout the world. Current GSM phones are atleast tri-band (the most popular 3 frequences), and some are quad-band (all 4).

Different phones have different unlocking procedures, so can't answer that part.

I live in the UK and there are plenty of shops around that will unlock a phone for about £5, no hassle on the spot. They dont do all phones but they do most popular phones. There is software on the internet that you can buy, along with a data cable that lets you unlock the phone yourself, but ive never tried that, so I cant vouch for it
