VoIp...will it replace traditional phones?....i know we already use it on our campus for internal and external use and i can't tell the difference in voice quality from that to a traditional phone....for those of you who don't know what voip is...its basically using your broadband internet connection to make phone calls. A few good freeware voip programs are skype and stanaphone. Skype is the most versatile...as it works with pocket pcs also....so..again..what are your opinons on voip?

it's likely to replace the traditional phones, but the telco's gotta make the move though. over here i believe all those calling cards service are based on voip, that's why the calling price is much cheaper than those from the fixed line telco's. there're also companies offering fixed-line voip service, but it ain't so popular yet...

VoIp=voice over ip...you use ur lan line (dsl/broadband internet c onnection) with a thirdy party app (skyps/stanaphone) to place phone calls to other userswho would also have a thirdy party app. Simply, using the internet to make phone calls. Hope that helps?

that US city is seattle. was it that...conventional phone calls use circuit switching so the lines are dedicated. but VoIP uses packet switching?

from my understanding...yes..voip uses packet switching ...packet switching is more efficient and robust for data that can withstand some delays in transmission...

    im scared of VOIP...
because i noticed all throughout my life the phone land lines have never cut off.
On the other hand Internet connections do cut off once and a while.

Id be freaked out that if there is an Emergency and i need 911 or to call for assistance, the VOIP will be cut out. I wouldnt wanna take the chance with anything like that!

i know...strange eh..some have 911...but its not direct or what they call true 911...its like routed or forwarded or sometin..and u make a good point....net connections drop..so dropping a 911 call...well then...a whole bunch of issues there...maybe voip and traditional phones will co-exist....

it would be a disaster if all your business lines are on voip and the internet is down because your isp is down.
