Just curious does anyone have a westerner friend who acts as if they are asian and talks to you about asian singers such as Jay chou or Wang lee hom? if that was the case it probably wouldnt annoy me but they tend to point at every asian and tell me how cute or how pretty they are all the time and she writes messages on MSN in chinese and tells people shes chinese but she not. Does anyone find that a little odd or am i just being sensitive
Don't worry about, in fact there are probably more than enough Asians who act western, talk about white singers, and who point out and simply lust after white chicks, and pretend to be real Americans, even though they're not... And no, I don't think you're being overly sensitive; just myopic and rather ironic.
I dont know any but i seen them, some white chick who even trys to talk English (her native language) with a Japanese accent!! BUT look how much whitewashed asians you got out there... leme guess, your friend likes those androgynous looking guys
What do you mean by they pretend to be real Americans? are you talking about Asians not born in America? If not, I don't see how someone born in American is not American because I am certainly American. LOL, I totally know what you mean about white people trying to act white though. I know plenty of them. They all take Japanese or Chinese and always talk about asian-y stuff like music and whatnot. I also noticed a lot of them are usually anime freaks..
When Asian ppl act like white .. we call them whitewashed trash .. when white ppl act like Asian, they call cultural appreciation ... lol that's something someone told me once.
"...pretend to be real Americans" was just a tongue in cheek jab at the inherent irony of the OP. Like you stated, I too, am an ABC, which means I'm an American national regardless of my ethnicity. I just hope people begin to realize that as China becomes increasingly global, there are going to be white and black Chinese nationals; that is, as people of other ethnicities born and raised in China who should be called Chinese. But as it is amply illustrated by this thread, there will be a lot of reluctance (or reverse discrimination perhaps) against referring to non Asians as Chinese. I remember a white American who I had just met, saying to me "Wow, you speak really good English" as a way of compliment, but which instead highlighted the fact that he didn't really consider me to be an American because I wasn't white. I, in a not so subtle fashion, pointed this out by replying, "Well, what an amazing coincidence... so do you!" -shock This was my tongue in cheek way of telling the man that my ethnicity has nothing to do with it; that after all, I was an American just like him. Bruce Lee fans aside, if white or black folks want to "go native" then let them. Some may even move to China, learn the language, marry Chinese, and become PRC citizens, making themselves Chinese nationals. It's their life, let them live it as it pleases them. So, you want to be Chinese? Knock yourself out, buddy. -rolleyes
i have friends that talk/write to me in chinese and i'm cool about it. i'm pretty amazed at how quick they can learn..
lol, i know a girl who's african-american and she's like an anime freak and she's really into those japanese stuff.
well other than the part about her telling people she's chinese.. it's not weird it's just that she really likes asian culture i guess ..
dont know any westerner who want to act like asian, but know a lot of asians who act like westerner....talking with fake accent etc... weird ppl
^ some accents you just pick up cause you hang alot with them, hey you cant really blame a guy thats stuck with all asian people in a class can you?
oh yeah i have a friend that does it when she's over she pretend to act asian and one time it go so annoying i actually told her to stop trying to be one when she's not... i guess i hurt her feeling.. sigh...
