I want to get some input from everyone and most importantly uploaders and converters about the rmvb format. I know that the rmvb format is not the most popular one for us users, but its seems to be one of the most popular one for uploads and converters (for TVB shows anyways). Its not too hard to find a player that can play almost every format (VLC) but it is also not something that come stock on any OS like XP, Vita, 7 or the Mac. so my question is why rmvb? And what do you guys think?
As someone who has limited bandwidth and storage space, i think the quality is pretty good for its size. This is just for computer viewing though, if you like to watch it on a big flat screen go for the hd ones
A famous saying by an American Civil War general cites the reason; Nathan Bedford Forrest's advice of how to win wars, is essentially to "Git thar fustest with the mostest" meaning get on the battlefield first with the most troops. In today's media wars, that nearly two century old military assessment still rings true. RMVB came about when people in the far east, especially within the PRC, had little bandwidth to spend on downloads. At the time it was arguably the best compressed video size that one could obtain via the internet in terms of download times. But, quality was another issue; it could not compare to the AVI or MPG; but damn, it was very quick and easy to download. So people were forgiving of the lower quality if the file size was small. In a very short time, it became a favorite of Chinese downloaders and have essentially remained so. New netizens DL'ing for the first time were taught by their older peers to use RMVB. Thus, RMVB is the de facto video standard for just about all Asian, esp Chinese video downloads, and have remained so. In business, this is also called market share. Once people start using a product and they're not unhappy with it, they tend to stick with it.
thank you Ralphreop, you explained very clear, for me i normally download rmvb it's quick, and for computer viewing it ok.
rmvb is ok for the the computer and the old CRT TV. You definitely want mkv for the 50+" TV's these days. They are about double the size but worth the download
It also has to do with Real being a closed proprietary suite, which pretty much eliminates compatibility and/or playback issues that exists with the variety of encodes that you see in the 'scene'. This factored with its quality/compression ratio has made it the choice of media sharing among Chinese communities in Asia and around the world.
