WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been arrested by British police over sexual assault claims in

The 39-year-old Australian was detained by Scotland Yard officers at around 9.30am after he voluntarily went to a police station in central London. Police contacted Mr Assange's lawyer last night after receiving a fresh European arrest warrant from the Swedish authorities, as anger grows in the US over the latest leaked embassy cables by the whistleblowing website.

Labelling the move as a "political stunt", Mr Assange's solicitor Mark Stephens said his client wants to find out what allegations he faces so he can clear his name. Mr Stephens has warned any attempt to extradite Mr Assange will be resisted, "mainly on the grounds that he may be handed over to the Americans".

Two women in Sweden have claimed they were sexually attacked when Mr Assange visited the country in August. He denies the claims. Mr Assange is expected to appear before City of Westminster magistrates within the next few hours so a decision can be made about whether the warrant is appropriate for extradition. Sky News' reporter Paul Harrison expects that Mr Assange will be released on bail for a sum between £100,000 and £200,000.

He said: "We're talking about a lot of money for him to be released on bail and it will have to be money from six separate people. "If the money can't be found then he will have to be held in custody on remand, but I don't think that will be the case as he won't find it difficult to find the bail money. "And I don't think there are any concerns that he will go on the run. It was his intention to meet the police and he denies all the allegations against him."

Officials in Washington are said to be watching developments "very closely".

Sky News' US correspondent Greg Milam said: "There is a growing clamour in the US for something to be done even if they're not completely sure what that should be. "The big fear for everyone here is what comes next. What will be contained in the next leak of documents and how damaging will that be?"

Yesterday, Prime Minister David Cameron's national security adviser ordered all government departments to provide "assurances" about the quality of IT security.

Looks like the governments have played the tried and tested character assassination card. If you cant silence them, discredit them and hopefully everyone will stop listening.

^ of course its all to do with politics..
without all these rape or criminal allegations there's no other way in hunting him down. For something like rape to be a crime, do you see rapists in worldwide news and being headhunted? No.
The fact that the Gov. wants him locked away so that Wikileaks can't be continued however threats has been made by Assange or someone else that if Wikileaks and its mirrors are shut down by anybody, there will be more leaks at a different website, so technically this is going in vicious circles.
I genuinely feel sorry for this dude, maybe because I don't see the harm in exposing what the Gov./army has done without us commoners knowing

^ exactly, i think thats the reason the site gives us the option to download every article on the site, if it went down another would show up 100%.. and i reckon more would take notice too.

its good to see that people at large are starting to see what this arrest is really about though

    Wikileaks and the USA...

Arrested because he didn't use a condom, thus breaking a shady obscure
Swedish law which labels him a "rapist". The influence really show.

    Hello, political arrest.
