I plan on upgrading to it sooner or later. I just my laptop on boxing day, so my hole in my wallet is still pretty deep so I dunno yet, but it looks like a pretty cool OS, i'd also like the home premium edition.

i have been running vista since it was released on beta, watching it change, it's nice to see it has become more and more stable and robust. it's certainly better then XP (imo)

anyway i agree with what you said about the system requirement. if you buy vista with all its bells and whistle most people would have to upgrade their system should it be more then one or two years old.

If you want to install Vista, you don't need to buy a new computer to run it. The important is to upgrade you memory to at least 1024 and upgrade to a decent video card. IMO, Vista is nothing more than just a pretty theme. If you want a Vista look, just install WindowBlinds. Vista hogs up resources and there is very little applications that fully supports Vista yet. If you really want to get Vista, make sure you get at least Home Premium because anything lower than that is crap.

I am using Vista Ultimate since I am fortunate to have corporate volume licensing and early access to download.

I feel one of the flaw of Windows Vista is probably the Windows Experience Index. While it attempt to examines the 5 key areas of the systems - Processor, Memory, Disk, Graphics and Gaming Graphics (Memory), your index is base on the lowest of those 5 categories. You need get at least 3.3 to see the rich aero glass feature.

Also, even without anything change on your hardware, your index can drop the next day as newer hardware come out giving users false hope that their hardware is up to the level. If you have 3rd party drivers that are not WQHL or signed, your highest score will be 1.9.

I think in the future, retail software design to work with Windows Vista will advertise the require index on their box, so if you purchase some software and your PC doesn't match the specs, they will not accept returns if you open the box. It's a cat and mouse game.. Hardware and software vendor will start using these numbers and the loser will be the consumer.

The only good about Windows Vista is the enhance security. ALSR (Address Space Layout Randomization) will be it harder for hacker to predict target addresses. It also make Vista more resilent to virus and worm attack.

However, this require DEP/NX enable. Microsoft have been pushing OEM vendors to enable DEP/NX in their BIOS by default.

Most people will probably disable UAC (User Account Control) in Vista because the implementation sucks unless you like dealing with the pain... I think it hit most to users who used to have full local admin rights to their system.

    I'm running vista too.
the security is idd better, microsoft even says an additional anti-virus wouldn't be needed anymore...
well if you think about it, isn't it actually a shame that we had to protect our OS with an additional anti-virus all these years, becoz it couldn't protect itself :s

well anyway, I actually don't recommend anyone to upgrade to Vista right now...
It's not worth the money and memory upgrade...
just download it, or wait for the price to drop or when you get it free with you pc/laptop.

  14. urg.. vista requirements piss me off... download.com has this automatic requirements check that fails or passes your system, and my laptop passed every section but the graphic card section...

i have a 200M Radeon express 128 MB card (i dont know the exact full name but that sounds about right). the blasted thing failed me and when i went to check the sub categories:

    required: 64MB (i have 128MB) (pass)
Pixel Shader 2.0 (i have it) (pass)
and direct 9x and up (i have it) (pass)

and the test printed a huge big FAIL!

screw that. im installing vista anyways.

Yeah, the hardware requirement really sucks. You certainly doesn't need a core duo to run. But if you plan to run Vista, it certainly recommended to get a graphics card with 256MB. I think Nvidia graphics play much better with Vista than ATI. The drivers seems to be more matured and more stable.

im gonna wait a while before upgrading, XP works fine for me and companies are just starting to support vista now

  18. its way to expensive to buy it tbh >< so i think i am gonna wait till i have upgraded my computer.. need better graphic card XD

  19. im not gonna upgrade my laptop... on the other hand, once i get the money, i will upgrade my 5 year old pc:

20 gig -> something in the hundreds
    add a graphics card
    new and more powerful cpu
and RAM RAM RAM. im at 128 for my antique PC lol its sooooo slow

as for vista itself, well, if my cousin's friend can get his hands on a copy at the Las Vegas Vista event, then i might get it for free >=D
