    Here's the problem:

I have this computer that is currently running Windows2000. I would like to install WindowsXP and I have the original CD, but do not have the Serial because the CD case is missing/lost.

Is there a software or any way to retrieve the Serial KEY directly from the CD?

    Thanks

have u used this cd to install the os onto another computer that you have?
hmph..from what i can find it seems that you can't pull the cd key from the cd itself as they are stating that the key is not stored on the cd...well..(have to cross reference this)...however...if you have previously used the cd on another insallation..you can pull the key from that system and a perfect tool that i keep and have used many times is http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
...i'll see what other info i have on my drive n update this..
update-again...from what i keep finding..its states that the key is not stored on the cd itself....seems like ur best bet is running magicjellybean on a previous installation..hmph..

I've downladed magic jelly and it only gives me the key for Windows 2000. I could, I guess, install this copy of WinXP on another computer and use magic jelly there and get the key#, but that would take so much effort and crap... especially since this version I have is WinXP (first edition, when it first came out).... I'm only doing this because I don't want to waste money to buy a new copy of WinXp :p

maigc will only work on the current os...so i u used the cd before to do an installation..use magic on that machine..have u used that xp cd before to do an installation?....and from what i've found...no one has been able to pull the actual key from the cd itself since it isn't stored there....

Well this is basically the story ..:

This computer is about 5 yrs old, and it is one of those manufactured PCs that comes with everything pre-installed, and so, including WindowsXp, which was just new at that time.

Not long ago, the computer crashed, and I thought I had lost the WinXP Cd for this computer, and so I had no choice but to install the "next" newest WIndows OS, which was Windows 2000, and so that was what I did. And that was probably a big mistake ( should have just let a professional fix it >.<)

But recently, I found the WINXP CD for this computer again, but don't have the case/sticker for it, and so no serial .... :(

I guess, the only choice now is to go out and buy a new copy of Windows eh?

hmmm .... u said ur pc is pre-installed with windows XP so it was already on there when u brought it rite???

if so there so there should be a sticker with a serial of the CD-key somewhere on ur PC as well

well i had 1 for ME on my casing for my old PC and 1 for XP underneath my laptop so i think u might have one too but im not very sure as i do have a backup up cd of XP for my lap as well but there's no serial sticker on the cd, its underneath on lap

Hm.. good idea. I'll check the case of the PC. Never thought of that, that it would have the CD serial on it. I always thought that was like a PC serial or something.

    Thx

yeah...good idea...if its oem..then its somewhere on the case...i assume u still have the case for the cd..and sometimes they include a recovery cd with the serial and you can also contact them and they can forward u the key...haha..sometimes the simpliest method is the best..
