That was an unexpected ending but I love how its not the typical happy ending bullshit. Good job TVB. Throw a curve at the audience.
It is a SHIT ending. There was no need for him to die! Every person with common sense would call the ambulance and make sure the victim will receive medical help in stead of letting him walk away. They are even police officers for crying out loud! And since Hui sir is so "smart" tracing details like no other, wouldn't he be smart enough to stay and get medical help? Shit ending!

The ending is only one short part of the series. It's more about the journey and what happens in the middle, doesn't always matter what happens in the ending.
