What's your worst experience with a virus/spyware etc?

Right now I'm scanning my computer, and already, I've got one virus detected. I'm kinda freaking out right now, because recently, my computer hasn't been working normally. and is kinda acting up and acting weird... It keeps freezing and shutting down.

So I'm praying this is just a minor virus...

My worst experience was that virus a few years ago, that was a popup right when you boot up your computer, and it gave you a one-minute countdown and shut down your computer all the time, and then I had to have everything erased and crap, and windows reinstalled.

I'm so paranoid of viruses, I always think I'm being hacked by some hackers, and that people are spying on me. :S

I'd have to go with the one a few years ago. This that infected my system and kept rebooting the it. This was back in the days of highschool. It was exactly as hkm just described. At that time i was using norton, piece of shit, antivirus, which led to the infection, and a few other reasons, such as a vulnerability in the actual os. However, unlike hkm, microsoft had released a fix within the same say i got infected and i was able to fix it without a reformat.
Nutin bad since then "knock on wood".

  3. reboot, laggy pc and annoying pop ups at the same time. wasted literally a whole day taking that crap out many many times. never will i use norton again cuz it literally "SUCKS!" even with half the so called "pop up blocker - maleware softwares out there"

ever since i've swapped to Kasparsky anti virus i've never even so much as had a spyware installed.

Norton detects some viruses BUT it also doesn't detect %60 of spywares so you'd have a whole buncha spywares on ur pc. Kasparsky detects both. It's like upgrading from a civic to a porsche you'd notice the performance difference right away. it might be a little slower but alot safer and better

Kasparsky + google pop up blocker + windows sp2 = % 95 safer then Norton

sorry bout the ranting i just hate norton for all those years of making me reinstall my pc wasting me literally days and lost files.

I second that on norton. Their shit is too process hungry. I've only had success with their internet security app. However, that was for someone else, i stopped using norton back in the day.

Try nod32 and the cleaner pro... both are very good at detecting trojans

got blaster on multiple computers at home, reinstalled and got it again, other than that not much other stuff that appeared to be deadly. Most of the times a reinstall will fix everything though i've grown to hate it as it takes quite a while

i hate spending time reinstalling...and i assume since ur a comp technician, by installing i assume u are not actually doing a complete install or ghost...

  13. On Wed. just got rid of W32.PINFI... Couldn't log into windows and to recover userinit.exe and scanned out all the affected files around 2-3 thousand.... All in all took about two days to get rid of.

I've had my ntoskrnl.exe corrupted... had to replace all the boot files

Had a case where comp kept restarting.....

All in all never had to resort to formatting my comp. luckily.

i only reformat once a year...other times..incase its a particular nasty bug and i've used up absolutely every option to fix....norton ghost...image pulled from network..and back up in no time...

  16. i can't bare to reformat and have to re-install all the programs over and set it back just how I like it and having to back up all my other data.
