look, 48 divided by 2(9+3). The parenthesis goes first.

Then it becomes 48 divided by 2(12)....not 2*(12) (lol) or 2*12
(The parenthesis doesnt go away when u add 9 and 3, it goes away when 12 multiplied by 2)

Then it becomes 48 divided by 24...which is 2. This is not rocket science....it's just someone trying to messed with your mind.

Sorry to revive a "dead" thread, but this was a pretty good question. I mean on the surface it appears so simple, but just a bit deeper there is that shred of complexity that makes you take a step back, even if in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter that much. We just need the "after-bracket state" of the equation to be cleared up...

In it's purest form, making no assumptions, 288 would be the correct one. I think so anyways (albeit I answered 2...)

In the UK if its in brackets, it should be calculated separate from what is on the outside. As long as you know the rules that are used in your own country (and you realise not all countries follow the same rules) there really is no problem.

    48/2(9+3) = 24x12.

  7. ^ the order of operations is universal.... this equation's setup to test the very principals of your understanding of basic mathematics.

what is wrong what is right is wrong right or right wrong? how do we know how wrong is right and how right is wrong to what degree is this right, to what degree is this wrong? We shall never understand what is right from wrong or wrong from right!

  12. For this equation, getting 2

    Getting 288

no, 2 does not equal 288 and 288 does not equal 2

on a logical mathematical standpoint right is true and wrong is false, the statement 48÷2(9+3) = 288 is True, therefore it is right. While, 48÷2(9+3) = 2 is false, therefore deeming it wrong.

    a difference of 286

    same as above

again from a logical mathematical standpoint:
there is nothing right from something that is wrong because of the grounds it is deemed wrong
for something that is right there must not be anything wrong about it.

but then how we know what you said was wrong was wrong and what you said was right was right gahhhhh mebe your definition of wrong is right and your definition of right is wrong.....my head splodes!

    48÷2(9+3) = answer is 2 because you have to calculate () first, (9+3)=12 then next to () is 2 , 2(12) = 24, then 48/24 = 2

    48÷2(9+3) = 48 / 2(9+3) = 2

    for 288 u need (48÷2)(9+3) = 288
