    Hello,

I'm Chinese from Malaysia. Can speak Cantonese but cannot read any Chinese except for my own name. My parents made sure that even though I cannot read chinese I must know how to write my name in chinese.

I'm ABC. My parents never put me through Chinese school, so most of the Chinese characters I can read are self-taught (or I learned it from taking one semester of Mandarin in college). I can only read very basic Chinese, but that's good progression considering that I didn't start until recently (2 years ago), and I learned almost everything on my own out of my own willpower.

lol, I read what you wrote and I noticed right away they're lyrics from MC Jin's song "Speak Can't Read." Yeah, his song basically sums it up for all of us non-native Chinese-born and our situation.

I'm a ABC I can only speak, I feel so dumb compare to people that can read it and write it, they make me feel like I'm not chinese at all =(

  18. Yep, I'm the same way...I can speak Cantonese and understand it, but I can't read it at all. But I'm determined to start learning how to read it. It's difficult for Cantonese because what you say and what you write on a piece of paper is completely different.
