Nukes are the desperate measure, I do agree with that.
However, I won't be as sure about whether "a few nukes" will eradicate all life on earth or not. Since radiation act more than just killing people like bullets does, it also destroy plant lives, effecting the food supply, contaminating ground water, all of which will in turn translate to mutations and/or shorter life expectancies of living organisms. Like the dinosaurs, the meteor did not knock them on the head and kill them, it created such a thick layer of debris and dust that the dinosaurs cannot survive the endless winter. Thus the term "nuclear winter" is what worries me most.
And for the Brits' nuke having a 40mi diameter? What does that number indicate? The impact zone? The effected zone? OR includes all radiation fallout?
I don't understand why one can be excited about wars, too much videogames, perhaps.

    hiake,
the "1st" smallest H-bomb exploded by the USA had a kill zone of 10 square Miles
with about 10 megatons rating. The largest "single" H-bomb ever exploded is 50 megatons by the Russia have a kill zone of 70 square Miles.
Current MULTIPLE warhead ICBM ( 10 or more warheads in one rocket) can have a kill zone of 100 square Miles or more.

and yes, what the bombs miss killing, the contamination of water and food will do the job later. it is probably the reason why we have such long time without a major conflict.

some people think that there is too many humans on this planet; they hope some will be killed off, however there is a better solution to the explosive population grow___ it is outer space.
with will, anything can happen, but dont kill people in the name of "population control", as "Providence" suggested.

The satellite was indeed China's, Hot Wings. And it's just an old weather satellite, if i'm not mistaken. But the shooting down of that satellite is what's concerning. If China is able to shoot down an old satellite, they are able to shoot down any satellite.

I hope there won't be any WW3. But from the looks of it, if there is a WW3; the world human survival rate will be minimal. Maybe this is what it meant in the Bible. Nations rise against Nations - end of days, ladies and gentleman!

Why can't people live in peace and enjoy life?
