A few years back when Nz was still a white dominated country everytime you'd see a Asian it'd be like seeing your own family...
You wouldnt believe how hard it was to find a asian person, asian food etc.
yes that was a isolating time.. but now theres tonnes of asians everywhere and I dunno I dont think the connection is as strong as wen we were just a isolated group

i'm somehow more connected with cantonese ppl, cuz i grew up while mostly living with a lot of canto neighborhoods. when i was little 'til now.
in san francisco i always have cantonese around me, so i'm used to it and connected.
but to mandarin ppl, some i feel are kind of connected, but some of them that i go to school with, the mandarin kids mostly acted too serious and they are too much of a hardworker that they kind of ignore w/e that's not as important to life. and some kind of ignored me at school.
but the ones that i meet outside of school are mostly nice. :)
but somehow they don't talk as much as cantonese ppl...

helping them out makes me feel more connected with Chinese people, of course then it depends if i'm helping out an old lady, a little child, or an unfriendly looking person, you know?

I try to avoid my prejudices and help anyone in need. However subconsciously, I think every one of us has an affinity to people who are like ourselves regardless of whether it's race, occupation, personality, gender, or other factors...

I easily associate & connect with anyone who is of the same race, has the same occupation, or personality as I do.

In regards to helping others, if they appear to be decent, friendly people who ask politely for help, I generally help them regardless of race. If they are rude and entitling, I wouldn't give them the time of day even if they are Chinese!

Exactly how he/she puts it. Generally, people like to be able to others that are very much in common with.

Yeah, I generally have more of a connection to Chinese people, especially Canto people since I'm familiar with the dialect, more so than Mandarin (which I only know a teensy bit of). And of course, we share a similar cultural background as well.
