I've had problems like that, but probably not the exact one, but similar. All I did was search it up on google and it wasn't long before I actually found a way to remove it.

^ Unless if he chose the option to receive pop ups from MSN but otherwise, he wouldnt have those unless if he got a virus from some sites or received buggy files no?
When an unprotected or a machine not configured for security properly goes online and you visit a site, a malicious one, pop ups are almost guaranteed to happen. Certain sites can install trojans/worms just by visiting them. Once the site loads, a trojan/worm is downloaded in the background, unknown to the user. Once that is loaded and running on your system, is can make any system changes etc.
