every chinese decendents carry a surname which can be trace to ancient times. (tree formula) like:

which part of china your greatx100 parents from?
    what dialect they used then?
why your surname being name that way? (if you notice MOST KOREAN have the same surname as example HAN and KIM)
why our people (same surname) are related and why they migrated to other place?
why we cant marry someone who have the same surname as we are? (chinese believe that if they get marry, there is a high percentage of chances YOUR decendents will have birth defects due to bad genes(extraordanary) provide from both of the parents, this is later scientific proven!!! woah the chinese know that since ancient time!)

For me you ARE chinese when you carry your parent surname! but oversea chinese have a mix example: ABC american boy chinese, CT canadian taiwanese or singaporeans.
there is some country that ban chinese name like the Indonesian, Thailand and Vietnamese government. or you may have your chinese name 2nd to your first name. (they trying to wiped out the chinese identity and gain loyalty from them)

I believe that you are consider to be Chinese no matter where you are born because it does not have an effect on the color of your skin....hehe....

Anyhow, I was born in Hong Kong and I do prefer to called myself Hong Kong-nese, however, if you tell the foreigners that you are from Hong Kong, they will immediately come to a conclusion that you are Chinese? -noclue

I used to consider myself as Dutch. But that was the past. Now i consider myself as a Chinese, because i feel closer to chinese culture than the Dutch culture. E.G. i eat rice everyday, always listen to chinese music and always watch TVB series :p

I think thats how a lot of people are, when they are young they see themselves like the other kids they hang with (mostly non-chinese) then when they grow up they realise what their culture is, etc -^_^

agreed with you there -- there is also a tendancy for young kids to want to fit in so not to get bullied for being different (ie chinese) so young kids generally hide their chinese-ism (i know thats not a word).

i did that as a kid, but after college, i would definitely consider myself chinese, even though bbc.

i guess as long as both parents are chinese then you are chinese, and its up to the kid to accept their cultural heritage and this is what will define them as chinese (applies to the kids in the 'motherland' too)

Now, let us get some facts correct. Nationality or race? If you are chinese by bloodline, then you are chinese no matter what or where you are born. Unless you are referring to your nationality. That will depends on which country you are born in. Make sense?
