80s and 90s are the best. they can sing live and have great stage performance. i used to like joey yung and watched her concerts. at that time i didn't know anything about 80s singers like leslie and anita. i accidentally watched their concerts on youtube and i was like. OMG, great stage performance. now i think joey is like a tree singing on stage, so i only need to listen to her songs, don't want to see her concerts anymore

Personally, I feel that most of them are able to sing quite well. Artiste like Twins, Lam Fung etc.. have really nice voice. Most of the Hong Kong drama shows starting and ending theme are sang by the actors themselves =)

Jacky Cheung, Alan Tam, Anita Mui, are the first few I can think of.

    Jay Chou is badass too

Sure. A lot can sing, but a lot more can't either. Its like that anywhere. TWINS, Edison, 2R they can't sing, but if you listen to Anita Mui, or Jacky Cheung, or BEYOND, or Grasshopper, there's a lot of good singers out there.

I can't stand most of the singers out nowadays. Alot of people fail to understand that just because a singer can sing their own song well doesn't mean that they have a good voice. The composers and lyric writers write their songs for them and they are tailored to their voice!! It's all about the packaging. If the industry is going to push you to the top, then the best songs are written for, plain and simple.

In my opinion, A person with a truly good voice should be strong enough to be able to sing different genre's.

Example would be Jacky Cheung, He has done country, blues, jazz, R&B, opera even. He can actually sing.

Another thing is with the Heavenly Kings. They were not all great singers but they each had their own cult following for different reasons.

Andy Lau = Started out acting, was already famous before he started singing. His triad movies also helped propel him and he is very famous in SE asia because of them. Most Vietnamese even know him.

Leon Lai - Not the greatest singer but had a very good look to him. Parents liked him for his good boy looks. His original croud started out being young. Now old women love him :p. He went downhill and started doing fast club songs.

Jacky Cheung - Best singer of the bunch if not all of HK pop. Great range of voice and is able to sing in almost any genre whether they were his songs or not.

Aaron Kwok - Great performer. Knocked the girls socks off. Hit it off in Tawian and then came to HK and furthered his career. Great concerts though his songs are on the easy side to sing.

The best song writers saved their best songs/lyrics for them almost exclusively.

Most of the people today aren't any better than someone you can find any any busy karaoke place.

My top picks for pure singing talent.

Male: Jacky Cheung, Hacken Lee, Roman, Eason, Jay Chou (TW), Leo Ku, (Alan Tam and Leslie don't even hold a candle to these singers. You would know if you listened to them live. They don't have enough lung capicity on most cases.

Female: Anita Mui (of course), Sandy Lam, Sally Yip, Faye Wong, Theresa Tang, Amei (TW) and some others that I cant think of right. I like Sammi Cheung though but she breathes too heavy when singing especially live, although she is doing very good for someone with asthma.

    to be honest...

altho im canto and im from macau (city REALLY near HK)

    no.
i dont think any of the artists can sing

    BUTTTT!!!!
im so surprised.. that this year and last year.. some really good ones came out~

like all those ones like.. sammi cheng/miriam yang.. they can just retire now.. cuz i mean what the newbies (like khalil fong, vincy chan, ivana wong, hin cheung, and a couple others)... have surpassed what they've done for the past decade. but they dont look good.. but the talent is like WOAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!

so yeah... but most of them are like from mainland china.. or somewhere else. there's actually not that many who have talent.

I do think that there are talented HK singers. I personally like Eason Chan, Sammi Cheng, Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung. The reason why HK singers are not as popular is because most of them focus more on Cantonese songs which,in my opinion, is not as well received as Chinese songs outside HK. But if you ask anyone who listens to Canto pop, its quite likely they will prefer Canto to Chi pop music. Like there are some HK singers who will sing the same song in both Canto and Chi, and its usually the Canto one that is nicer. I think Canto sounds better than Chi.

Btw, as HK singers are more fluent speaking Canto than Chi, their Chi may sound wierd due to the canto slang. So to be fair, it might be better to judge HK singers based on their Canto and not Chi songs.

Side track: I'm quite surprised to see a post that commented that Andy Lau can't act and sing.. Are you kidding me? I think he is a great actor! singing wise I think he has his own style and I rather like his deep voice.

it depends on wat song u are singing cos some songs, u dont need a good voice to sing them and they sound better that way. better to hav a not-so-good voice than a really annoying voice like Ronald sings-thru-his-nose Cheng.

No. There really is no point in listening to HK music anymore. Everything I hear these days are mainstream pop music with no creativity. I don't mind it that much infact, but coupled with the fact no-one can sing, it really amazes me its still around.

If you really must listen to HK music then I can only recommend old singers like Cass Phang, Sally Yeh, Danny Chan, Beyond, Faye Wong, Sandy Lam + some others.

I partly agree here...lot of good singers...e.g. Joey, Janice and Jill, Ronald Cheng, Jacky Cheung, Leo Ku, Eason, ...

However I can't believe you think Miriam, Charles, adn Kelly are good. The worst is Justin,...man..he is only good recorded....not good as a live performer...-nono

    i totally agree with you
if you're judging if HK singers can sing or not, you gotta expose yourself to most of the HK singers out there... if you only look at the popular ones like Twins who are obviously weak in singing wise... then.. haha you'll always believe HK singers cant sing, but look at JOEY YUNG or JUSTIN LO or HACKEN LEE or EASON CHAN etc... man they're GOOD
