i thought Taiwan is an independent country until recently China wants it back? Alot of my Taiwanese friends seem to think that Taiwan needs to go back to China and that they belong to China for some reason. I'm confused ... especially when I thought Taiwan is an independent nation.

taiwan should be independent because it has been separated from china for such a long time, and the culture is different. I don't see any reason why china has to force taiwan to become part of china

hk is suffeirng??? i didnt know that.

50 or so years of own legislation and government is nothing compared to when it was under chinese rule. i think there were never an independent taiwan since the day it separated and thats why some of them wants independent now.

taiwan's culture is different to china????????? you got to be kidding. dont you know most of taiwanese were once chinese and have the same ancestors as chinese and smae culture. in fact, lots of them speak Hokkien (my homeland language). its a language spoken by people around fujian province (opposite of taiwan).

    wow.
Most of the Chinese population in the world are Mandarin speakers. I myself am from Hong Kong and even I find that comment a little...you know, ignorant. -huh no offence.

In regards to whether or not Taiwan should become independent, I would have to say no. 'cause I think Taiwan's independence is something the Americans have hoped for since this will weaken China's power. I know China is already a growing powerhouse, but there's no such thing as too much power. right?

...this issue is way too complex.

Taiwan was a japanese colony for quite a little while... And I know their culture is a little different. Several taiwanese people i know took offense when i asked if they were 'Chinese'.

I think it is inevitable that China will gobble up Taiwan as it becomes a larger world power though. The geopolitics of the situation are pretty complex, but economic factors will eventually push Taiwan towards annexation. In the recent past the main thing keeping China and Taiwan apart were political disagreements and issues with China's Communist policies... but given that China is quickly evolving away from communism and placing huge emphasis on capitalist production, Taiwan would be stupid not to accept a Chinese offer to join with the mainland.

lol im also amused by the 'HK is suffering' comment... Hong Kong is one of the most powerful financial capitals in the world. Companies are moving headquarters from New York to HK, and starting to list billions of dollars worth of stocks on the HK market, cuz it is cheaper. The tradeoff of HK to China occurred 10 years ago and any negative issues that developed have long been resolved. The only problem Hong Kong has to worry about in the near future is sinking due to global warming and melting ice caps hahaha.

Taiwan is quite independent in how it behaves, however economic influence of china is getting stronger and stronger, (economic) ties between are very strong)....but i think they should be part of china......but not under direct central rule from beijing as a province, but more like a SAR)

I think i would like to see them(CHN and TW) merging on equal foot..50/50...so china can finally become a more party political system(again)..before the KMT left the mainland for TW and left china in the hands of just one political party (CCP)

    Someone an opinon about this?

Of course Taiwan should be separate. Infact even better if China is split back to the many different countries before the First Emperor. So instead of having one person who is the best in a country. You can have 10 or eleven national champions. You can enter 10 times into the Olympics as 10 separate countries, 10 votes in United Nations. Infact 10 times more opportunities for everyone. Just like in Europe you can have many nations then why not in China too?! You can have 10 film industries, 10 No. 1 songs, 10 X presidents , 10 X the fun, 10 X any version of anything, almost!

I mean even when you have lots of relativesand children you would not want everyone to live in the same house or estate, would you! They all want to be their own masters in their own home and land and be independent!
