Personal Experience (and a friends too):
If you buy simple things like bags etc... not electrical,
i'd say its totally safe, (check seller rating)
Me and a friend both bought USB flash drives and memory cards.
Those memory devices from ebay are prone to stop working.
or worse, the seller claims the problem doesnt exist =.= and then offer a $5 refund (my 8 gb usb was $40)
this is a while ago... havent touched ebay otherwise...

i tend to shop on ebay by their ratings and feedbacks from previous buyers. I also make sure that they have the paypal facility as well.

I think it depends on what you buy. check the feedback and maybe if you are planning to get electrical goods or something expensive, it's better to get it in a shop cos you are sure can get warranty or refund if anything goes wrong. it's harder on ebay. I always use ebay to get consumables like printer inks and toners.

i still say with ebay, only buy wat u can afford to lose =)
gotten fake stuff before... but i guess sometimes its expected...

better off paying a lil more at times to get from online stores, slightly safer methinks...
best bet is to get from real store =)
that way u see wat ur getting

buying from ebay is always risky. here are some helpful hints i got before i started buying from ebay:

    1) always check the seller's ratings. my rule of thumb is anywhere between 98-100% is pretty safe. but still, if any rating is less than 100%, ALWAYS read the feedback they get from other buyers. usually other buyers comment on their product, communication and shipping. i sometimes check to see where the buyer is buying the item from and what they bought too.

    2) never buy anything from anyone that does not offer paypal as a payment option. paypal has a buyer protection up to a certain amount (it'll tell you in the payment options section at the bottom of the listing). and those who state that they only sell to confirm customers and usually pretty safe to buy from.

    3) try not to buy big ticket items from ebay (like 40" tv's, name brand products that are hard to find because they are sold out somewhere like uggs- cuz most of the time its fake, cars, etc.) most likely with these items, you wont be allowed to return it no matter what happens to it during delivery.

    4) if you see something you like, check what else that seller is selling. cuz a lot of times if the seller is selling A LOT of the same item, then half the time that item is a fake (i.e. name brand purses, shoes, even clothing believe it or not, etc.)

    5) ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS read the listing word for word. dont skim through it. sometimes people dont read that they are buying and just buy it and they end up being disappointed in the end.

    6) if you have doubts, ask questions. never be afraid to ask questions. just remember, there are no such things as a stupid question. if you ask and you get an answer, save that reply until you receive the item. cuz if the item has a problem with it and wasnt stated in the listing but u asked and was told there was nothing wrong with it and there is, then you can dispute it and 99% of the time, you win and get ur money back.

    7) always ask for tracking when paying for the item. tracking only costs like $1 with the post office and is always free if using UPS or FedEx.

    8) last but not least, dont just settle for just one seller. search around for the item. chances are, you'll find someone else selling the item for either much less or the other seller could be a more trusted seller. so shop around.

thats about it......i know this was a lllloooooonnnnngggggg post but all the advice above helped from getting cheated on ebay (and ive been buying from ebay for 3 years now). good luck!

lol, it can be safe yet can be unsafe, lol
coz some people are scammers, like they take your money and never send it, then they make a new account, :p. so its just , Only buy from Trustworthy Sellers

Ebay is pretty safe, but like everyone said, just have check out sellers feedbacks and ask questions. Also it depends on what you are shopping for.

doesn't stop a power seller just "closing down"
which was what happened not long ago in australia :p

its just a matter of luck many times...
if u've bought from them before, and its been ok... then its an "ok" assumption u can continue to buy from there

i still prefer buying from places that have an actual shop front if it only costs not a lot more
