I think it's more to do with greed, they believe they are super smart and so their plans will go smoothly in the hopes of getting the big loot. Otherwise like you said from school but judging from cripple co's looks it doesn't seem like he is one that does well academic wise, therefore could be hard for him to meet them there unless it's through connections.
