sigh** buddy, I can sooo relate.. I have UBER fob friends... and they always make fun of my really noticable english accent weneva I have a chinese convo with them.. but hey, if I'm with my white friends.. they don't notice at all ^_^
TOTALLY it's embarassing to go to Hong Kong with other kids who's from there the same age as you, but they're thinking like ''Wow........that chinese kid can't speak chinese right''
its like that for everyone who isnt born in the Asian countries.....i'm CBC and i can communicate in chinese but nothing else, cept i feel more chinese than white....
i raised up in south east country, the mandarin speak by china people is hard to understand and i had too many slang which mixed with all different languages, so i only got chinese look.. but no a pure or real chinese. but still i appreciate chinese history and cultures ...
Trust me you are not the only one, I felt very much like an outsider when my parents bring home relatives from China and Taiiwan. I always feel left out and when they start to face me and try to talk to me, I end up speechless most of the time. I usually gave in and let my mum answer for me.
ummm... well, when i visit taiwan of course it's different. i feel like a faint connection but not really. i used to feel really really weird when i was with my fob friends who just moved here and they'd all be like talking in chinese and stuff. but now i don't really mind at all. i just throw in some of my bad chinese with them and say the rest in english.
I was born in China but I came to the US when I was 4, so I'm a "jok cha". I was forced to go to Chinese school when I was younger, so I'm decent with speaking, writing and reading Chinese. I worked with people that just came over from HK or China and I don't feel out of place with them, sometimes they are amazed that I know so much Chinese. I'm lucky to be able to be very fluent in 2 different language.
i'm often laughed at by my friends because of my little knowledge in mandarin an chinese characters illiteracy...they called me a banana:(... but i'm much better now...i can sing k without the help of pinyin and i can understand more chinese characters..i have a friend from china and i had difficulties understanding him...and funny when he asked questions i answered a different thing...so embarrassing lol...
I feel like that at times, and not able to understand much (speaking also) of the language i.s even sadder.
i come from an asian country, but eng background. in sch, always laughed at when i speak chinese; becos i speak it with an eng accent. even in aus now, i get laughed at by ppl who speak chinese. and when i speak eng with a bit of an aussie slang, they laugh too. so i guess u cant please anybody.. just do whatever u think is best
