well mine falls alot of the time (cos i have those tiny portable ones) and they get thrown around in my bags lol
i remember wen u format the external drives, there was some option that let u choose soemthing about wen u quick release it or osmething
not sure how "useful" it is

but i only worry abt plugging it rite out wen i write data to it, cos sometimes hte data doesn't get written lol

but with the bigger external drives, its just there for storage
its either plugged it all the time or not... hahaha

    plus it doesn't matter anyway
it's only meant to last a couple of years hahaha
then time for a new one =D

i think mine has only lasted a year because i dropped it... portable ones arent as fragile are they??...
mine was plugged in all the time regardless of if i used it or not... was too lazy to switch it off or unplug it

yeah i guess dropping it is not a good thing...

but generally, depends how often u use it of course, that i think external drives last less
due to the environment its in
usually its bumped around when u take it places and it runs hotter as the case usually has no ventilation or fan

    its external drives, but portable
ie the 2.5" ones as opposed to 3.5"

ive got 2x80gb and 2x160gb on the 2.5"
main reason i chose them was for portability

    but i also recently just bought a 1TB 3.5"

essentially they are hte same thing, just that 3.5" require more power that the usb doesn't provide
    too bad u can't get like a 1TB on a 2.5" lol

  7. You should pull out the usb if the external HD is still running because it will cause it to corrupt data being written to it
for flash drives.... if you pull it out and can fry the memory and board entirely and plugging it in wouldnt even be able to power it on so your date would be completely lost....
