luckily no one has ever done that to me.. but i probably would've slapped the person silly until he cant even say what his/her name is.. honestly tho, in a way i guess it makes sense why he doesnt think its "real chinese" cuz.. canto IS branched off from mandarin (and has lotsa slang in it) and usually when ppl say chinese.. they immediately think of mandarin.. since bigger population than canto speakers right? im canto too.. so dont bash me if i say anything wrong. LOL>.<
lol that definitely hasnt happened to me before..but yeah i speak a litto canto and i like it much better than mando..i went to mando school for like 4 yeras and dropped out cus i cudnt get the hang out of it and my accent wudnt work right..lol its hard! cus with canto theres like..a way of speaking and a way of writing. but with mando u just speak what u write...if u know what im talkin about *shrugs
if someone said that to me, they'd get like 96 other pplz mad hahah but that would really piss meh off since well pplz who think that just probably jealous cuz cantonese is harder to learn than mandarin and the tongue of canton speakers is like......it's really hard to develope so yeah, we special...no, ultra super dynamite special!!!
Yea agree . I speak cantonese and I think it makes more sense than mandarin. There has been an increase of oversea mainland chinese coming over here, where I live and I work in a shitty supermarket and just because I'm chinese and don't speak mandarin they would ask me a question in their native mother tongue and no I can't make out most of what they're saying. These poeple seems angry without an answer but hell if you ask me a question not in your homeland, then learn the language where you're living man. BTW they use english where I live, yes england.
mandarin is chinese and canto is not chinese? then how about hakka, hobo, hokkien, teo chew, hubie, xian, shanxi... all ppl talk different language in different provinces... weird...
I completely agree with you. Some mainlander started speaking to me in mandarin at work assuming since I'm chinese that I would reply in Chinese. Even though I speak both Cantonese & Mandarin fluently, I just answered him in English. I believe that if one lives in an english speaking country, then one should learn the language and speak it. Don't expect other people to tailor to your needs. Outside work. in Chinese restaurants, with friends and family, they can speak whatever they want. Usually though, it's the mexicans who are the most annoying because they never bring a translator anywhere and they keep asking for someone who speaks Spanish (eg in a bank, hospital, store, etc...) Come on, learn some English, otherwise go back to where you came from !
People that don't think Cantonese is Chinese are idiot losers that shouldn't even be calling themselves Chinese. I think the reason Mandarin is so much easier to learn compared to the other languages is because it makes it easier to be used as a universal Chinese language that everyone can talk to each other with. Try learning Taiwanese, it makes no freaking sense at all :/ (in relation to Mandarin, that is)

damn right! Nothing wrong with cantonese anyway, I can understand mandarine perfectly fine, I'm pretty sure if I wanted to, I could learn it, but I don't want to and feel like it, cause Cantonese is Chinese anyway, so why am I bothered to learn Mandarine, at the end of the day, at least I know Chinese, whether it be madarine, cantonese or hakka. Yes, I understand a lot of hakka and speak a little bit of hakka as well. lol I like cantonese anyway, how easy it is, all like shortened version, dnt have to say every damn word to make a sentence, u noticed how when u read a chinese magazine, thet got all the words n stuff, but us canto speakers can jus like ditch a big number of those words n it still all makes proper sense to us anyway lol

If you are talking about modern China, dialects you speak of are spoken commonly but official Mandarin is taught at every school -- so even though people from different parts of China speak their own dialect, they have perfect command of the official Mandarin. It's insulting to compare the failed effort that is Hong Kong trying to teach Mandarin to the common education system in China. In fact the same can be said of Cantonese speakers. It's just natural to stick with people who share common background. The fact that you think Cantonese is shorter and easier is probably due to your knowledge to it, if you talk to a teen speaking in Mandarin, you will realize they have their shorthand and slangs too (which no one outside of the native speaker know) I have always had this love-hate relationship with Cantonese, it has the most resemblance to the older form of Chinese, but at the same time it's morphing (I would say deteriorating myself) due to popular media and terrible language education. Most magazine and quite a few newspaper print non-sensial words which should have remained in the collequial realm.
If those mando kids still piss you off just point out to them that they had to make a Simplified version of the chinese dialect becuse they were too imcompetent to speak anywhere close to the old dialect like canto CANTO FTW !!!!!! ( i think what i have just typed out makes sense. lol) ( i'm gonna get flamed by some1 and i know it.lmao)
That's too bad. Must be pretty ignorant people. Most of my friends who are Chinese speak either Cantonese/Mandarin, and sometimes an extra form of dialect, such as Toisan. So generally, the people I know understand that people in China speak a collective of dialects that are Chinese. You pretty much learn that wherever you go, that Mandarin is not the derived form of what early Chinese is. Oh wells... stupid people will be stupid people.

I've never encountered that situation before either but thanks to b-lee for that little article snippet. I always thought mandarin was somehow closer to the original Chinese language. As for Hong Kong, I don't think that it's a part of China. It's just this special area that doesn't necessarily count as a country, but it's not part of any other country either. I think World Factbook or whatever it's called expands more on the official position of Hong Kong in the world. I'm glad that Hong Kong is not considered as a part of China (although many people say that it's a city in China) because it has its own unique characteristics that should be accredited to Hong Kong, not China as a whole. And no, I'm not saying I don't like China but there are major differences between Hong Kong's culture and society in comparison to China's culture and society.
