Wow, I see 2 titles mentioned on here I've somewhat forgotten: Leprachauns and Silver Bullet (was scary when I was little) Anyway, here's my top 10: 1. Child's Play 2. Dolls (1987) 3. The Doll Master (Korean) 4. Un Chien Andalou (Luis Buñuel, a short surrealistic film but it has a scene where a woman's eyeball is cut open with a razor...) 5. HK Vampire films from the 80's (dunno the titles) 6. The Omen (the original) 7. H (Korean) 9. The Eye (Japan) 10. Saw
Hmm, haven't watched 2,3, 4 & 7. Speaking of #4, did u watch Hostel? There's a scene in there that is similar to what u r describing, except that it was snipped off by a pair of scissors or sth. Close-up. LOL. that's like the goriest scene in decade, besides Saw. The Eye? I thought it was HK made.. Is there a Japanese versioN?
Oh, my bad! I was going through the list of Asian horror films in my mind and must have mixed up things there, but you´re right, The Eye is a HK film! (was thinking about The Phone, Unborn But Unforgotten, Ringu, Cure and a few more of these Asian films with a ore or less same storyconcept) Oh and I´ve skipped number 8...In that case I´m going to add Leprachauns!
I notice something interesting ... from the list here, there are hardly any recent (2005-2007) ENGLISH movies that are listed as the top 10 here eh... besides Saw and Hostel. The recent ones are mostly Asian horror films. Looks like the Asians are takin over the horror scene.. lol.
Yeah, the more Asian horror films I see, the less I like the American/English horrors. Have you asked me my top 10 about 6 years ago, it would have been an ALL American list. The western horror films are too predictable and it ain´t going to be better if Hollywood is going to remake the Asian films. edit: yup, have seen Hostel, see my earlier post in the other film thread.
Hollywood seems to be running out of ideas. They are more into remakes now. I have yet to find a mind-blowing recent horror movie except Saw I, Saw III and Hostel, which are 'human horror' and not 'ghost horror'. And i am so looking for a great creepy scary ghost movie which they have yet to make one... since the Sixth Sense. Even then, the ghost wasn't nasty. So were Gothika and What lies Beneath, no real evil ghost. I can't even name any good Hollywood ghost movie which is recent lol. The Amityville Horror and The Omen remakes were crap. Lookin forward to 28 Weeks Later and Hostel 2, hope they won't disappoint! Asian horror films just recently are turning stale too IMO, particularly Japanese and Korean ones where the ghost is usually a long-haired covering part of the face, white-clothed female, crawling etc. Thailand has made some above average horror flicks. HK? Still waiting!
Exactly my view too! The first time you see Ringu was cool, but after a while even the white-clothed female with long hair in the face and blue/white painted kids who suddenly pops up won't scare you. Or the 97th film about people dying after having visited a website, house or have listened to the same voicemail/ phone etc. you'll have the feeling it won't surprise you anymore.
Hollywood seems to have lost the ability to scare, the pacing got too predictable (boredom-gore-boredom-gore-gore-gore). Not only did they fail in scaring us, they failed in putting a message across. Once upon a time, there were underlying messages to horror films, open endings (without really making a crappy sequel to spoil the original)... I ain't putting too much hope in 28 weeks later, the visual is... well, kind of predictable (read: not stunning)... Hope it exceeds my very low expectation.
OK I have added you people's list on top Hope to have more... Come on, there can't be so few horror fans around...
@Hiake: Haha i don't even care if they have a message to send across, deep meaning or whatever, just so long as they have a LOGICAL, reasonable storyline. The important thing is the scare. The Exorcism of Emily Rose had an interesting storyline to it, pity the ending sucked. I couldn't understand why the girl had to die so the priest could tell his story and prove there are ghosts(???).
And the whole good winning over evil rule of thumb in Hollywood (few exceptions include SAW) totally sucks. I want to know that there are things which are meant not to be resolved (lack of closure seems to be characteristic of Japanese horror...)
@Hiake: haha i agree, it's more realistic that way... Even though i am a good-ending person myself. I prefer endings like Exorcist, Poltergeist etc... where the evil lose at the end of the day. Haha. By the way the ending in Exorcist was kinda disappointing...
I agree. Most of japanese horror I've seen so far are like that, there are some that are just plain bloody and that's it. But I still watch it anyway XD. Is it me or in most horror films there's alwasy a long black hair girl who just pop/crawl out of nowhere -unsure I rarely see a male figure whose a ghost.
Come to think of it, there are very few asian male ghost movies compared to asian female ghost movies... lol. I can't even name one, except for The Grudge where they had a male, female and a boy. Hollywood, there's Freddy, Jason, that little boy in Sixth Sense...
