Yea the weather can really mess with electronics. When it rains hard etc my satellite tv service sometimes goes down. I hate it when I'm watching the middle of something interesting.

Had it here in BC during the early evening a couple of days ago. Miraculously didn't lose power, because my part of the grid somehow can lose power with just a strong gust of wind sometimes. I turned off my computers when it started pouring down like in the Amazon or something with the lightning, just to be safe even though I have UPS's for them. Then it was blistering hot the next day like it's been the last week or so, and it was so humid from the downpour the night before. And it's still cooking this week, god it's hot. =|

Let's put it this way; for 20 dollars, you get 20 dollars worth of protection, for 100 dollars, you get 100 dollars worth of protection. How much protection you feel comfortable with is really up to you. It's rather like comparing bulletproof vests; some are level I (can stop a .22 or .38), while others are level IV (can stop fully jacketed NATO 7.62MM). Again, how much protection you feel comfortable with is really up to you. The more costly surge protectors usually means that that can withstand and survive a much more powerful jolt of electricity.

But, on the other hand, if all you're buying it for is to use it as a glorified extension cord; then yes, any ole "protector" will do. That is, you're really not protecting anything, you're just using it as a connector with multiple outlets to plug all your stuff in. Just be careful that a lot of those real cheap cords (even with the underwriters laboratories logo) are knockoffs from China; they're fire hazards as the UL logo is faked. Most have never been tested by UL, and the ones that have generally fail.

Ouch man, you got hit hard, for some reason I'm thinking this is more of a US thing? Here when theres a thunderstorm, I do get blackouts and stuff but all my stuff seems to be okay in the aftermath of it. Hmm, strange.

    Kdotc, Sorry for your loss.

consider yourself unlucky, out of everywhere the lightning could strike, it had to strike right at your place, what are the odds of that?
