Its all up to the parents in my eyes, for example, my parents always talk canto to me cause they want me to speak it, because im chinese. My cousin on the otherhand is spoken to by his parents in english. Big mistake cause he barely speaks any chinese, even though he goes chinese sunday school.

I definately will be teaching my children to speak canto or mando or both!

Actually, ya, there's more and more of this trend of overseas Chinese (2nd generation and beyond) wanting to integrate with white society, be white-washed.

As much as a parent tries to re-inforce it, honestly, how often does the typical CBC or ABC gets to speak Chinese.... A few phrases here and there to parents adn grandparents and aunts/uncles, like, "I'm hungry" or " I need money" or "good" or "bad"... nothing that really delves into the real deep rich and beautiful language of Chinese. Even with that added extra bit of Chinese school, it's still not enough.

Furthermore, I notice lots of Chinese kids today still have pride of who they are, that the're asian, but don't care much for the language, as if knowing the language is "bad" or "uncool". ... Like for example, I have some friends who think I'm weird because I learn Chinese ....

If you take a look at Chinese families that have settled in North America during the late 1800s and the early 1900s during the gold rush and the building of the railway, and also the families that immigrated during the mid-50s - before the mass immigration of Chinese families during the 70s/80s..... --- ALL OF THE DESCENDANTS of those families pretty much don't speak Chinese at all. i know some people like that, like they're old grannies, and they speak ENGLISH to each other when going out to dim sum ... it just looks so weird, because you'd expect a group of old Chinese grannies to speak Chinese to each other, but they speak FLUENT ENGLISH !

  10. damn I don't mind if they speak English... as long as those pple lose dat toi san waaahhh...
