Lol but the lesser known artists will either die because of piracy or get popular. Just like how COD is pretty much swallowing the whole game industry every damn year lol.
Just a quick google of theft Piracy merely makes a copy, the original owner still possesses the movie or whatnot. Based on your idea of theft, if I were to make a superior product to a competitor and grab his potential sales, I would be stealing?
^we are stealing potential sales for the artists and movie studios, admit it! Back a couple of years ago, I didn't have access to internet capable of downloading movies. At that time i actually purchased a couple of dvds or vhs (Even though not a lot), but currently i am not buying ANY movies so yeah definitely stealing sales. I mean the argument here might be that the customer is not going to buy that media anyways so they wouldn't get the sale regardless. But thats like saying someone stealing a loaf of bread is not stealing, as they weren't going to buy it anyways.

Fact remains, with this digital age, piracy will always be a problem. It won't go away and will only get bigger. Artists and companies are starting to realize this and some of them have garnered popularity by freely distributing their work. Now to the important question, who gets the majority of cash from music sales-the production/music company or the artist.
From the movie studios, yes. From the artists? Hardly, they make most of their money through their live shows, if anything, piracy gives them more exposure and more sales to the shows. The studios are the ones who get money from the actual sale of CDs and whatnot.
Eventually its going to affect the artists if the studio doesn't record a specific number of sales, they are going to cut their support for the artist and they are going to be dropped from the label. Call all those live shows and other sponsors goodbye. They could go independent but look at the sales of independent records compared to the ones with the major record label backing.
^ true that on the getting more exposure people who pirate usually buzz about that thing later on so its a good thing look at television drama ... they get pirated all the time but also hyped soo much which creates that fanbase and eventually buying box sets and stuff
Yeahhhh dont get me wrong, im not bothered about that personally, as long as im doing it legally and staying within the law then its all good for me, but thats as far as i go, until its outlawed which wont happen unless EA takes over music industry. >.< You have a point there, for me i have my MP3's backed up on my HDD, my other HDD, my other HDD, my mp3 player my other HDD my external HDD's. i think im backup crazy >.< --- --- Back in the day i used to pirate stuff like mad, download software, download music etc etc etc... but the one thing i dont like is when people who do that try to sugar coat, try and use word play and semantics to make it not sound like what it is.. its stealing, theft etc etc.. may as well accept it is what it is, if a person cant then maybe they shouldnt do it.
That pic was actually for the lulz and it is also true which is why I kinda loled when I first saw it. Since I was the one that started it, I shall end it (try). Piracy is not theft, a better term would be copyright infringement therefore the 'potential' decrease in sales is because of copyright infringement so not trying to sugarcoat anything as ralph suggested as this is not theft in the first place. As some already stated, the original still exists and nothing has been stolen and I rise 'la courts' for those that still thinks that theft equates to piracy. This is a problem with some major businesses/labels, they waste millions of $$$ tracking people or filing lawsuits instead of using the money to improve their products or research related improvements, i.e. having a superior product that is very worth buying which makes the pirated version look shit like extras that can't be pirated so actually encouraging people to buy. This is because piracy will always exist as long as the internet is still up and running so they are just wasting their money like retards by trying to gain more money by decreasing/stopping piracy (note that not every regular person is well off enough to buy everything as some people did have the money to spend they wouldn't download illegally in the first place although doesn't apply to all but this is the reason why I said 'potenial' and not certain decrease in sales before and of course there are other factors but I won't dwell =p), oh the irony.
