wow, im surprised there're more ppl from Guangzhou than HK so far... everyone always thinks my family's from HK just because we look 'clean'. = =''
for some strange reason, many people believe that anyone from Mainland China are poor, dark, dirty-looking, and have horrible taste in clothes. i really don't get it - when i went to China everyone looked a lot like people from HK, just a little bit less colourful. >< i don't want to be sounding like some bitter girl who is against the world, but iono its what i've been noticing for a while now.
I see where you're coming from. If I were forced to stereotype Mainlanders, I would say there are 2 types, the rich and the middle class/poor. The rich dress & look better than the average Konger cuz they want to tell the world they're equal, if not better than people in HK. The middle class & poor cant afford to dress as upscale so they tend to not look as trendy as Kongers, but they are by no means dirty or poorly dressed; just not as sharp. But my stereotype really only applies to people living in China or who recently immigrated from China. I would say that 1st generation Mainlanders in the western world look the same as Chinese from other parts of Asia. One of my most attractive female friends is from the Mainland and she definitely looks and dresses very well. She is middle class...
oh my gosh. i get that a lot too. my parents are from guangzhou and people think they're from hk because they don't look like they're like poor/dirty or whatever. HELLO i think my parents know where they're from more than you. geez. <_<
you mean Taishan: 台山县 yes, about 90% of Chinese in Canada(75% USA) are from there. thats before the late 1980's when HK people started to come over. I am connected to Taishan people 'cause my aunt is married to one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taishan its not that far away from where I am from, which is Zhongshan:中山县/香山县 PS: my mother is from Guangzhou city.
my grandparents take it back to Guangzhou/Guangdong right on! whats the correct way for a persons last name from Guangzhou / Guangdong to be spelt in english? ive always been stuck with a last name that dont belong to me because when my family moved to Canada their english was very limited and we didnt have english names resulting in part of my family having different and messed up last names + other things -_- anyways my chinese surname is 黄 ( wong ) spelt yellow in chinese. Does anyone have the correct spelling? should it be Houng , Wong or something like that? I went over to asia this past summer and learnt even my dad and grandfather had a different last name then me! theirs was a lil messed up too because they told me whatever its the chinese spelling that counts. i just need to correct this because i have friends / people who think im a lying mexican (no offence of course) because of my current last name... most people think im lying that im chinese because of my current last name. surname 黄 from Guangzhou / Guangdong = ? in english
It depends... If you want a Hanyu Pinyin romanization [based on Mandarin] of the character (黃), it's: WANG. Hanyu Pinyin is the romanization used in Mainland China where Guangdong is located. However, many Guangdong people immigrated to N. America through Hong Kong, and because HK doesn't rely on Mandarin, its romanization would probably be WONG. I think the answer is that there is no "correct" or "official" romanization for the character. Just depends on context.
