I was there 3 weeks, cherry blossom season, met some friends in tokyo and kyoto, went to hiroshima and osaka and okyama and nara..
tokyo is unreal, very commerial, yes but I went to otehr places that were very cultural like nara nd kyoto so it ws balanced.

Been there twice last year. First time was 26 days in the spring; saw lots of cherry blossoms as we started from Tokyo and going south ending up in Fukuoka.

Second time was hardly 3 months after the first time, end of July, when my parents ofered me a deal that they'll pay my expenses if I go with them to Hong Kong (to renew ID card) if I pay my own plane ticket. >>>as a huge fan of British band The Cooper Temple Clause, I saw my chance to see them live at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan since it's only 3 hours flying from HK...

2nd time was only for 5 days though but Japan is the best best country for tourists to visit without fear being mugged, with colourful culture and very friendly and helpful people even if you don't speak a word Japanese! And being me having a fear for dirty toilets, it's the number 1 country to go to without ever having to worry about that subject LOL!

Would be visit Japan again as soon I've saved enough! :D

Which hostel and where was it? So I'll be warned just in case...I mostly stayed at small ryokans, minshuku's and decent budget hotels and a few times the 4 stars hotels. Really in all the shopping malls I've been to, the public toilets looked very clean and you never have to be afraid of being left without toiletpaper.

it was 'new koyo' in tokyo. the toilets smelled terrible.
but it was still a fun place though, the halls looked like a prison with steal room doors, but nice clean rooms and a helpfull great staff. Id go there again, next time.

but yea japan is a very clean country. the first train I took from nara airport, was spotless. and after teh long drive to ueno st., everybody got off, and it was just as clean as it was at the airport. that amazed me.

.... Well, how I wish I can go there.
Wanted to go for an exchange study, but it was too much trouble and decided not to. How sad my life is. Though, I really wonder about the japanese behaviour... Is it really that bad, as in when I read mangas... The deliquents were really bad and etc... Really wanted to confirm it with my own eyes.

If anyone is going to Tokyo soon, you might check out Hotel New Koyo. It's just 2700 yen a night, up in Minowa which is two stations north of Ueno. The only downside is you definitely get what you pay for. Mine was a two mat room and it was a medium (so I was told anyway). But if all you need is a place to sleep (not like you flew halfway around the world to stay in a hotel anyway, right?) you won't find a much better price.

kamakura and nikko are also close to tokyo and are well worth checking out, as well as yokohama.

Id say its quite the opposite, it was the most non-agressive country Ive ever been to. the japanese are facinated by violence and crime, but dont really do it themselves. well theres allways some, ofcourse, but very little.

Japan is the safest place ever! If you guys go there, you have to try out a capsule hotel! Those things are hilarious! As for hostels, if you are in Sapporo, do NOT go to the one west of the station...that is underneath the bullet train tracks. lol
