Depends on which type of foreign student...

China chinese or Honkie chicks/ Shanghainese..taiwanese etc...

but..i think you can jut speak or learn manderin or cantonese.. LANGUAGE big barrier buddy....

unless you are super hot.. LOL

Cool advice man. Yea i do talk to her about class work related stuff. Any ideas how i can bring up something funny? I mean its much easier for me to say it with someone who is native born because they get your idioms and such but for a FOB person they wont really understand your idioms so you are forced to use more basic speech which wont be as funny.

I recommend a book called "How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie" You could easily find a torrent of the audio book but its best to read because you'll retain it better.

What i've learnt from many countless self improvement books/tapes is that people always like to talk about themselves, if you want to be a good conversationalist you have to be a good listener and truly be interested in what they say or people will catch on and you wouldn't be able to keep the convo flowing. I figure alot of people like talking to me for that reason alone Oh yes.. never cut another person off during their talk, wait until they are done then its your turn. Never be too focused on "me me me" :sp_ike_d: as said people like to talk about themselves more then anything else.

I think the rules would apply to dates too, never fidget , always be confident in what you say and have good posture / talk with your body, makes you look more confident but dont overdo it. You can't talk to a person without eye contact as that indicates "hey im looking at you im paying attention to you you you!" If your shy better overcome it and just do it! imagine talking to your boss and being all shy, how would they think you are like? you might not ever get a promotion. No one likes a person without self worth or confidence, it makes you look weak and you'll get trampled in life. It's good to be confident but not too cocky/arrogant

Never be the know it all person, people hate it when they are criticized no matter what, so if you want to criticized someone do it nicely and subtley, during a convo if you know a person is wrong or if they are around many people, refrain yourself from critique or if you must, do it nice and subtly without making them lose face. Usually a person will, even if they know they are wrong, after being criticized harshly will have resentment and will try less or do the opposite of what you say because of your harsh critique.

Now everyone likes a good laugh right? If you suck at jokes don't force it, smile is the best medicine. A smile can show alot, it can show you're interested and will want to make another person smile too. If you want to be funny practice some lines and use at the right time and see what signal you get.

Well these are some lessons i've learned in my many self improve books/tapes, they are not specifically tailored for dating but i can guarantee if you have any of those qualities, it'll work just as good.

I see you're trying to get a foreign exchange student too lol. I see myself doing all the stuff you mentioned smile, eye contact etc. I have that book too but I only read the little summary in the back haha.
What are some conversation openers you use? I can only see myself going up to her saying hey how did you do this what did you get blah blah blah. She sits behind me a little to the right so I can't really stand around to keep a convo or talk about somethi g not class related. If she was sittin right next to me then it would be much easier to say random stuff and get a convo flowing.

I want to tell you something. Don't learn Chinese and starting talking to Chinese to her. She might assume you're already Chinese and she'll think this asian dude doesn't even know how to speak Chinese.
Since she is trying to learn English, she'll automatically be interested and tries to understand what you're saying.
