MIT is one of the top schools in the country. Even my parents have heard of MIT. In fact MIT and Harvard are located pretty close to each other. I went to visit the campuses during my trip to the Boston area.
Actually MIT is in fact a pretty famous school its just that harvard is even MORE famous and MIT gets pwned cause if i rmb correctly they're right next to each other
rofl oops i responded to the same thing as shy and shadow_thi3ft ... i just felt the need to answer to that ... it seemed odd to me that mint_T never heard of MIT
Mehh...the Ivy League Schools are nice... but its rumored that they are only credible because they're for really rich kids.
Okay, it's a false notion to believe that the majority of students who attend ivy league institutions or any of the prestigious institutions are rich. You'll probably find more rich students there than at the state colleges because they are able to afford the tuition. However, ivy league schools have the reputation that it does not because of the rich kids who go there, but because of the quality of education and resources available to students.
The requirements for out of state students are HIGH. All the out of state students I know were top 2% of their school. You need high 1400+ SATs and at least 3.8 for Berkeley and Ucla. If you are in state it would be much easier... Now for the 2nd question...during the application process they do not take your major into consideration (I know cause I use to work for them). When we look at the applications its a breakdown that looks something like this... 1) G.P.A - 30% of your application 2) SATs - 30% of your application 3) Personal Statement - 15% 4) Other activities (Ex: President of a club) - 15% 5) Referrals (Optional..if you have a UC professor write you a recommendation its almost a sure road in though....) - 10% They also look at things like geographic location (they want a mix of people) and your house hold social status (ex: average income of your neighborhood). I worked with them in 2002-2004 and they take that stuff into consideration. If anything they'll let you in and tell you to choose something else. The great thing with UC applications is that you can fill one application and mail to all the campuses. At least one will accept you (almost a guarentee). Best of luck with your applications. Tell me if you have anymore questions.
OMG, from MA all the way to CA!! but then, some of my friends want to go to out of state colleges. one wants to go to ND and one wants to go to NY. oh, btw, i'm from California, graduating this year (so excited~ Class of 06!!). i'm going to UC Santa Barbara in September. everyone said it's a party school because that's where the rich people live and all... now i'm worried. oh well, the campus is right next to the beach, SWEET!!, but overall, the area, enviornment, activities, and people there are great. IF, anyone decided to go there, let me know, it will be cool knowing someone going there from chat forums and all. many friends of mine are going to UC Irvine, UC Davis, and UC San Diego.... how sad, we're all separated. oh, and a few are going to the new UC, UC Merced... yep, brand new. so not much going on there. you can even start your own club. simpliest way to find out some stuff about colleges is at collegeboard.com, at college search, gives you some of the basic info on any colleges there are. best of luck. anyone going to UC later on, let me know.
omg, MIT is like the asian dream. Thats what I have heard all my life. It is really hard to get into and I think its big on math. If you saw the movie "A beautiful mind" then you should remember how many famous people came from MIT, including the main character in the film.
John Nash, the man A Beautiful Mind is based on, got his PhD from Princeton, not MIT. He did teach for a few years at MIT, but nothing big came out. He spent most of his time @ Princeton, and from what I've heard, he still has office hours there.
Ok guys name me 3 Universities in the Aussie land. MIT is not that well known compared to Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. Just like how many of you have not heard of CIT (A tech school ranked higher than MIT in the early 2000s)
