AMD Athlon XP 3000+ or 3200+ would be a close equal to P4 3.06

This is not even a fair question anymore. AMD is kicking Intel's ass in every aspect. Even Dell has agreed to use AMD's chips. The cost/benefits is simply better with AMD.

although amd has the lead now, Intel's new Conroe chip gonna blow away the competition.

I am AMD & Intel, whichever is better at the time. I upgrade my PC every 3 years and my current one cost me $4,000AUD. It's using a AMD X2 :D

I think the intels are the ones with heat issues. AMD atm is better for gaming but test have shown that the new Intel Conroe beats the best AMD FX-62 AM2 by margins lik 10+ % (off the top of my head)

    heres some new benchmarks http://www.hkepc.com/hwdb/x6800vsfx62-10.htm
