While, I don't agree with Steve about Tablets being under 10" = obsolete. You cannot compare the two devices. The two devices are targeted toward 2 specific markets even though they are similar. Spend an hour at a Apple store and you can see a clear demographic of people who walk out of the store with an iPad and people who walk out of a store with an iPod touch.
The two products are different and have their beneficial factors, when you say they are two different markets, it's really all about the pricing. The average teenager would not be able to afford an ipad on their own, and if they did.. they wouldn't really have a chance to use it during school hours... chances of it being stolen during gym class? super high. but it still does not mean they wouldn't want it. a side note.my Aunt bought her 6 yr old daughter and ipad. wut? lol the price for 2 ipod touchs is still slightly less than and ipad, price wise, the cutoff for who rocks and ipad and who rocks and ipod touch is pretty clear.
Well, if you compare the requirements and specifications of an ipod touch to an ipad, the two major differences are obviously: screen size and 3G capabilities. However, the main difference in my opinion, is that the ipad falls under the classification of luxury item. The purpose of adding 3G and a bigger screen is purely for convenience. So with that said, if you compare the actual needs requirements, yes the ipod touch/iphone is smaller, and might be harder to read stuff for example, what is there that the ipad can do that the iphone/touch can't do? My initial point in posting that image is that by comparing the needs and requirements of these two devices, we can clearly see that the ipod touch meets ALL of the same requirements as that of the ipad. The differences of these two devices are purely for convenience purposes, and thus, is a luxury item. The fact that an ipad costs 3 times more than an ipod touch, by just having 2 luxury requirements more, makes me think that Apple is purely preying on those who like to spend money without thinking. Tell me what the ipad can do that the ipod touch can't do? And I'm talking about practical needs, and not luxurious needs.
You are comparing the two devices under a general audience. The iPad targets an older demographic who actually has the money and would use it as a part of their business. And I can give you plenty of things and iPad can do that a iPod touch can't. -A CEO of a small clinic walked in to buy 6 iPads for all of his Doctors at his clinic because there is a specific application for an iPad that can pull up patient medical records, MRI and X-Ray scans. The iPad is a great size for showing patients these scans. It's a efficient informational system allowing the clinic to run a smoother operation. Try to do that with an iPod Touch. -A group of traveling salesmen with a iPad with 3G is able to create documents, spread sheets and presentations on the iPad while on the go. The iPad has a specific cable for connection to a VGA projector to present presentations at the resolution of an iPad. -A lawyer with an iPad 3G with MobileMe is able to have his secretary schedule meetings and events on iCal on her Mac in the office, as well adding a contact in the contacts book. All of this will be pushed via MobileMe to his iPad which will receive that anywhere with a 3G connection within seconds. -The iPad has a Camera Connection kit where families and others who travel can import photos directly into the iPad to view it right away and to free up the memory card in the camera. -The iPad has a plethora of business applications where the iPod touch does not. Such as document, e-mail encryption. Applications that allow users to remotely access a PC/Mac. -An iPad 3G with MobileMe for someone who has sensitive data on the iPad will allow that person to remotely lock, track and wipe his iPad clean if the iPad was stolen. -The dean of UMASS was recently given an iPad loaded with books, PDFs, floor plans of the school, a calendar of events so that he can catch up to speed with the operations of UMASS. Some of these were iPad specific applications. I'm not ragging on him because he's old, but generally the older demographic prefer a larger screen so they can actually SEE text without finicking with the settings or struggling. I can go on all day.
Are you sure that the iPad targets only an older demography? And only business users? Only? They account for what? 10% of the potential users? If Steve Jobs designed the iPad based on such a minor scope for his products, he'd be sending Apple to bankruptcy land. When a product is researched, designed, implemented and tested, one of the biggest requirements is to make the product in question a potential solution for as large an audience as possible. That's how profit is made, hence, why I compared them under a general audience. To develop a specific product with such a small audience in mind is an idiotic business decision, and would have you end up in bankruptcy court in two seconds. My aunt is a doctor, who was required to use such application. She said the iPod touch/iPhone is more than enough to suit her needs to use that specific application. Again, the only thing you outline, is the fact that it has a bigger screen to display more information. It's not impossible to work with an iPod touch/iPhone screen (albeit harder, but NOT impossible). This basically addresses the bigger screen as a convenience factor, i.e. luxury. Quick office for iOS allows office document modification. Works for iPod touch and iPhone, AS WELL as iPad. And to address your argument that iPod touch cannot connect to VGA: ^ above cable works for iPad AND iPod/iPhone. Oh, here's a cable for RCA too! Granted the iPod touch does not have 3G, but there's also free Wifi everywhere, which this "iCal" application can be used for iPod touch and iPhone as well. 3G is a convenience component, that doesn't mean that the iPod touch CAN'T do the same thing on the application level, as the iPad. You may have to find a wifi spot, but that does NOT mean it can't sync meetings. Get a memory card reader for iPod/iPhone. Lol, sorry to break it to you, but the iPhone also has the same email encryption. And as an iPod touch user, I use VNC remote desktop ON A DAILY BASIS to control my PC/Mac remotely. I can SSH too. I can FTP too. I can do everything else the iPad can, application wise. Only because iPod touch doesn't have 3G, it can't remotely wipe. But the iPhone can. And they share the same hardware. Agreed. But again, what I'm still trying to tell you, is that the bigger screen is a CONVENIENCE feature. All of the capabilities of the iPad can STILL work on the iPod touch, but on a miniaturized format. You provide great examples of use cases for the iPad (which is good), but all of your examples show me that you argue that the iPad and the iPod touch/iPhone differ on a middleware (application) level. Here's the thing, hey all share the same App store, and thus, the same access to all the same applications lol. I'm a software developer doing research in iOS application development. Also, my argument, and you haven't addressed it, is that a bigger screen and 3G data are simply CONVENIENCE features, and in product development, convenience is synonymous with luxury. Furthermore, I am arguing that the HARDWARE side of the iDevices share the SAME BASE FRAMEWORK. the iPad is simply oversized (a luxury), but that does NOT mean the iPod touch or the iPhone can NOT do the same. Me too. edit: oh, if you don't understand any terminology I've used, please feel free to ask. I'll be happy to clear it up for you.
I'm not going to quote you in this post, or it'll end up flooding this page with repeated information. I never said the iPad targets ONLY older demographics. But you do tend to see a older demographic that buys the iPad. You have to also understand, just because the iPad is marketed to a general audience, doesn't mean every demographic of every age buys the iPad. 10% is heavily underestimated. While I am not suppose to give you exact data, from first hand experience I can tell you 4 out of 5 iPads I sell is usually for people who are 40+ Just because they target kids with fun games and apps doesn't mean parents will buy it for them. 10%? Believe it or not, but business users and sales account for a much larger portion of Apple's income then you think. While I can't give exact numbers *cough40%cough*, I can tell you it's pretty high. You have major corporations like GE who is utilizing only Macs, and more and more business everyday converting to Mac users. In any type of business, anything that makes you more efficient makes more money. Of course it's not impossible to work off of a smaller screen, but it will slow you down and make you inefficient. Instead of having a scan at the size of 10", you have a scan that is less then 4" where the patient/doctor has to pinch zoom, scroll to view and etc. When a tool allows you to become more efficient, it is not a luxury item, it is a necessity of your business. Quick Office, Office to Go, etc etc. are good apps for the iOS platform. But have you used Page, Keynote and Numbers on the iPad? Those apps are far superior in many ways in terms of visuals and support. The technical part can be argued, which I'm sure you'll bring up, but with Pages, Keynote and Numbers (an app ONLY on the iPad) you'll get full technical support from Apple staff in store and off site with Applecare. And efficiency can also be argued here. You can create the same document, numbers sheet etc on both a iPod touch and a iPad, but because of the larger screen on the iPad it will be easier and not as hard as a smaller device (as you mentioned) which results in efficiency once again. I never said a iPod touch cannot be used with a VGA, but the cables Apple sells in store is specifically for iPads. Even the one you posted is made for an iPad. You can use them with the iPod touch but the resolution is not going to look as good as an iPad. No matter how you twist it, having almost instant calendar, bookmark, contacts, keychain password syncing via 3G is going to be much better than running around looking for a wifi hot spot. Never seen a memory card reader for an iPod Touch/iPhone without Jailbreak. Jailbreak =/= no support from Apple. And not everyone is a app developer whose able to fix their own devices. I apologize for not researching on encryption for the iPod Touch/iPhone. Never been brought up to me. Wasn't talking about the iPhone for remote wipe. We were comparing it to iPod touches, not iPhones. While you argue that the same things can be done using an iPod touch, if the same can be done on a iPad at a more efficient manner, it becomes more than a luxury item. If the dean runs a school just a bit more efficiently every day it can have drastic effects. The iOS devices do not share all of the same Apps. While iPhone/iPod Touch apps can be ran on the iPad, iPad apps cannot be ran on the iPhone/iPod Touch. While you see things from a developer point of view, I do respect that, but I see things from the front end point of view. I see hard data that defines the user of the iPod Touch and the iPad every single day. I do agree with you that the hardware shares the same frame work. But I wasn't arguing that it wasn't. I also agree with you for many users, the larger screen, 3G, selection of apps are a CONVENIENCE and LUXURY fact, but for many others, it is not. *edit Sorry for bad grammar. Writing this from break on a iPhone.
foxconn...doesn't say is foxconn but the Chinese company who makes them announced the 200k unit in stock until february... then it will start the production of ipad2 and first release is april as the earliest
i use my dads ipad and i think they are very cool though i was sceptical at first, ill ask him to get me one for my bday. - sent from PC.
No I get what your saying. I have speculations they will release a new one this year too. And of course I have speculations of what's going to be on the next one. But speculations is just speculations and rumors are just rumors. I just don't like people stating it as facts.
the next ipad is going to have square edges just like iPhone 4. It's going to be lighter and have a camera in the front and back. That's all the info that apple has released about iPad 2.
Yup. And it's suppose to serve scrambled eggs in the morning with a side of bacon too. Apple said so.
