I think leaving the computer on is fine, except you might be wearing out the moving parts. Fan are cheap, but Id be more worried about the harddrive because losing data really sucks. So if you are leaving it on all the time, atleast set your harddrive to turn off once in a while so that its not always under constant mechanical strain.

haha. I used to work for a computer manufacturer. We had to "butn in" the computer. i.e. put the computer in a heated environment and leave it run for at 48 hrs straight to see if it fails. so I think it is design for the heat. But sometimes because of the parts were not "soldered" properly, it becomes a "cold soldered " problem. i.e. when it is hot, it is running. But once the computer cools down, the part is no longer connected hence it won;t start again., It is a manufacturer failure after that in my opinion :)

^ Doesn't it get slow after hibernating? I tot windows eats up a lot of memory backing up the files before hibernation? hee.. but im no expert either.. correct me if im wrong.

This is kinda on the same line of question. I just bought two new lcd and was wondering if I should power them off if I power off my computer? They naturally goes to sleep mode. or is that good enough?

I never ever let my computer run over 8 hours straight. And I unplug modem & router when I sleep. At the minimum, if I'm afk for more than 15 mins I turn off my monitor because that's what uses energy most. Being in environmental science co-op means I got to be a role model and save the planet's lazy ass ppl.

  17. you guys think hibernation can be a substitute for turning off?

it just saves your desktop, and turns off... that way it boots up faster...

whatever i doubt it matters ive left my comp on for a month b4 .......but if u do leave it on that long i suggest u should get extra fans or invest in a good cooling system though....after i got the fans i can leave it on for days without problems no lag or anything
