    i'm Cantonese too. i can speak it fluently but i dont know a single character haha.

    Don't worry your not the only one who cant write or read it lol. I can write and read a little.

    When I go to chinese resturants with friends tho, my friend has to read out the meals to me. Cause the waiter will give chinese menus straight away lol. T_T

    oh no because i usually just order anything that i remember that i ate in that restaurant.. usually like the egg on beef thing or the cha siu, roast duck stuff lolz. hhaha

    fluent in cantonese. want to learn to read so that i can understand the chinese menu for dim sum

    Couldn't you be fluent at both languages? I personally know someone who is--her dad is from Hong Kong and mom from Beijing. So, she knows how to speak both and does so everyday at home.

    Plus, if you know how to read Chinese, it is easier to learn any other dialect of Chinese, including Cantonese, Mandarin, Shanghainese, etc. This is from my personal experience, because I speak only Shanghainese at home and used to speak Mandarin at my school in China. But, now that I am hooked to HK's TVB series, I started picking up Cantonese just by reading the Chinese subtitles and matching them up with the actors' words. Now, I can understand most of the words they say in Cantonese without even reading the subtitles. Thus, knowing how to read Chinese is very important.

    Cantonese. Can understand but can't really speak fluently anymore since been in U.S. too long.
