I find it weird that I'm cantonese and not manderin seeing my family in china live in a manderin area and I can't understand a word of manderin. I can understand cantonese can't read/write and can get by just with speaking.

haha I gotcha, that was almost the case for me, I was born in the US but I was only taught to speak catonese, then, I learned english, forgot my chinese, and my parents almost gave up on teaching me catonese again.

Well, with me living in the US, I don't need to worry bout english either, but when I was entering Kindergarten I had to learn or be forever stuck in the Speech class >< quite embarrassing. And so, my brothers taught me and my parents helped by switching to english and I got caught up in the wonders of the english language I forgot my roots, and now, I'm currently trying to reach them, and make them grow, considering I still speak like a little child when I speak catonese.

    Yeah, Canto-pride. hahaha

That's really odd that there's only one Mando-person. I guess mostly Mando-ABCs/CBCs probably have their own forums to frequent.

I'm a native Cantonese speaker, but because my dad's Toisan, I understand that and speak a few words, and I also am in my third year of Mandarin at the University-level.

Does it really matter if we speak mandarin or cantonese? We are all Chinese. Is this right?

I think in the long run, yeah, it doesn't matter too much, but I think there are also slight cultural differences, inherent in just the two different languages, that make the two very distinct.
