from an american hollywood standpoint, how many asian actors and actresses can you list off the top of your head? Geisha went for people with name recognition in america, hoping that would give the movie and extra push.
I liked the movie and the actors were pretty good : ) I don't mind that they were chinese playing a jap role
Yea the first time I saw this.. I did find it a little strange to find Zhang Zi Yi and Michelle Yeoh in it. I really hope this doesnt turn into another "All asian look the same" crap.
I heard that the book is much better than the movie. but i havent seen the movie yet...imma download later when i have time i think
Race is not a main concern, as long as the story is good, actors showed their professionalism in filming. That's what I am looking for when watching a movie.
i reckon even if they had no-name actors and actresses acting in the movie and spoke fluent Japanese, it would've been a hit anyway!
The show was better than expected. Probably a combination of good story line and good performance from the actresses.
the movie is targeted for western audiences, done by a western director, of course it is gonna be in english. what? so asians cant pretend to be asians from other countries?
I saw on a news article from yahoo a few months ago that the chinese has banned the movie in china cuz of the issue, cuz they didn't like the chinese actresses playing the roles of japanese characters, I don't really see the big deal though...
is this movie any good? i have heard people talked about it but don't really know if it's worth watching.
Thats a good point, I didn't even realize that it was chinese actresses playing japanese parts. And...they had annoying accents throughout the whole movie.
well.. at least they're asians.. and maybe the movie's more targeted towards english audience.. so that why they speak english?
I just watched the movie not to long ago i think it was a pretty well done movie.. it kept me entertained. I didn't mind the chinese characters playing the japanese roles i think they did a overall good job. and i do agree with some of the past comments it was targeted for a american audience and both the main characters chosen are the only few known asian actresses known in western society. If they didn't chose michelle or ziyi, really is there really any other person they can really chose? ANd memoirs of a geisha is made as a high budget blockbuster movie, they are not going to risk the chances to chose some unknown person to have starrng roles.
I watched the movie... it wasn't that bad. But I'm reading the book right now, and some of the things make more sense. Like... they cut too much out from the movie. And I really don't agree with the fact that it's in English, AND they have 3 famous Chinese actresses playing Japanese roles. It's obvious they did that because of the Market. It's almost like, well they're asian, so it works. Don't get me wrong, the movie was still good, the scenery was beautiful, and Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeo, and Gong Li played their parts perfectly... but still... I thought it would have been better if it were in Japanese. I think they were a little too safe. Sure it was a high budget film... but I'm sure they have some pretty famous Japanese Actresses out there. It would have been fine if they were famous in Japan and not in America. Cause the main characters, they're all pretty famous in the States.
