i watched it and i liked it verymuch. there was a really big fuss about this on yahoo movie reviews or was it some othe place i dont remember
I've read the book, and when i watch the film it looks weird..=S I prefer the book, which i'm not a reader...=P
does the race of the cast members really matter? as long as they portray their roles good then it is best to have them cast it. I mean hell even Leonardo dicaprio played a British man in one of his movie, do you think those Europeans trip as much as you are doing? Whats the problem of them speaking English for the entire movie? do you expect the audience to look at the subtitles throughout the movie?
The Americans just don't understand other cultures. Taking Chinese actresses for Japanese roles would never be accepted in Japan. There are no lack of Japanese actresses . It's all because of MONEY. Ziyi being a well recognised face all over the world , they must have thought it made more bussiness sense in taking her for the publicity of the movie.
You are contradicting yourself. Let me show you what you are saying. Of course "Hollywood" wants someone like Zhang ZiYi to cast the role, they want to play it safe and wants the audience "the Americans" to view it. If you have some kind of unknown Japanese girl to cast the role, the movie wouldn't be as appealing. Thus, the movie won't sell.
Very true. I'm not japanese or anything, I'm chinese, but I think that it would have been a bit better if it were played by a Japanese person.
I thought this movie was kind of boring. It could have been everywhere, everytime, everyone. Just that the word 'geisha' adds a small mystic touch to it. It's just one more B-movie.
It is really a good film, and the actresses played very well, but it is still a little strange to use the chinese actresses,I am chinese,so I know the different between a chinese and a japanese, zhang ziyi is 100% chinese, even in the film, even wearing japanese clothes, though she did it well. So the film is a mix of chinese culture and japanese culture, different from original book, maybe it is disappointing to someone, it is not so bad, so unacceptable for most people
honestly people, sometimes we can't even tell US apart... when i see viets, they think im viet when i see chinese, they think im chinese when i see koreans, sometimes they think im korean lol and...we aint got much thai.laos.or japanese around these parts so i cant say about them but...yea and heck i have a hard time determining someone's ethnicity sometimes as well. and honestly, they were just going for a look, its not like they were speaking japanese in the movie.
All japanese actresses refused to play the geisha because they all felt their english was not good enough....and would felt embarassed about it
I would have enjoyed the movie better if it starred Japanese actresses. Even better if they spoke in Japanese and used subtitles. Chinese actresses speaking badly accented English = no thx.
Gosh, that film was utter crap, one of the most butchered adaptations from a novel ever. Really destroyed my impression of ZZY. The English DID NOT WORK. Accents all over the place-Chinese American accents too At the least, they could have stuck to subtitles.
i think they should've used japanese dialogue and eng sub, and they really should've used japanese casts for this movie because it is part of Japan's culture and history right? It's not like ure ever going to see a black president in a historical film about U.S. right? you gatta at least make it reasonablely close to facts and realistic in a way that we would feel and say to our selves "ya, that's how they looked like and the language they used to communicate with each other"
it was such a good film...ziyi zhang was great, and hot but the sex scene didnt play out for me.....i dont like it when she did that
