Well you don't have to look too far in terms of having a meteor heading Earth-bound, I remember reading about it just a few months back, it's going to have a close encounter with Earth in 2012 and impact the Earth in 2036.

But an intergalactic ride which lasts over 10 lifetimes sounded a bit iffy, even for desperate measures...
