Actually, obesity IS a disease - I believe this would be enough to set that straight. Also, 60 years ago, the definition of obesity was different than it was now. You can't expect that somehow, EVERYONE in the western hemisphere suddenly decided it was time to get fatter - especially considering that, while the common perception is that America's the only country getting fatter, the rest of the modernized world is also. Dietary and exercise habits alone are not good explanations of why people are becoming more obese - you have to have more reasons than that. You should also remember that those people eating McD's are also the poorer half of America, and also the half that are least financially equipped to fight a budgetary consuming disease like obesity. Getting on the treadmill also requires cash - which is what most people don't have when they're obese. Sure, you might say that making your own food and spending less on fast food would do the same, but at the same time, time costs more money than anything else combined. TL;DR - obesity isn't just about the diet. Sorry for the long rant - some of my friends are combating the disease, and I for one sure know that their disease at least is caused by something other than their dietary habits.
