I love Altum Angels and they are hard to come by....
I got three tanks right now so I decided to plant one of them. I agree with you that it's pretty difficult growing them in a planted tank especially with other community fish in there fighting for the food and it's harder to do water changes so bare bottom ftw. Thinking about starting another one to grow out some beautiful discus :D

Yeah you should, what do you think of Penang Eruptions or Wayne's Blue Knight? They are pretty awesome, too bad they don't sell Blue Knights here in the UK.

To be accurate, symphysodon aequifasciatus. That is their scientific name. There are many so-call strain (variety) in the discus (symphysodon aequifasciatus) world. What have been posted in this thread are all domestic bred, the wild you see in the amazon have different variety such as green/blue, brown and heckel. To name a few domestic bred: Pigeon blood, red turquoise, tiger turquoise, penang eruption, spotted snakeskin.etc The list goes on but the one I named are the 'accepted/recognised' strains, some seller name (strain) discus differently to gain a higher selling price, of course it could go off as "Double-Rainbow Woohoo" but those sound ridiculous. In chinese the name is called "7 choi sun sin" or Rainbow angel and it's not called discus "tik bang".

The name Discus is technically derived from it's body shape however the newer strains/type out in the market has changed the definition of a discus fish, notably the bulldog discus which I won't go into detail as I don't want to steal this thread and go off-topic xD

If you wish. Bulldog discus is not actually a strain but a deformity, it is a deformity because of the spinal cord (problems). The main culprit here is related to the mycobaterium, because of this it may have created this lordosistic deformity. There are different levels of deformity, some are extremes with ugly looking huge eyes with a bent spine, like O}< whilst some are pretty majestic looking, eyes are proportionate to body size and has a standing egg like body. 0<

There are various reasons as to why your bulldog discus died, they require different diet and because of this it is crucial that you feed the correct diet.

    P. Eruptions and W. Blue Knights are beautiful.....there are so many different strains which makes it so hard to choose LOL and it's hard to come by some nice discus that aren't stunt discus. I love albinos, they're so unique haha. They take a lot of time and care too....right now I'm piled with school and work so I got no time to start up a new tank :( maybe later on in the year....

Time is always against us. They are beautiful but they are pricy however it's worth their beauty. You are right, the quality of the discus vary from area to area, here in UK is hard to get a hand on "Show-Quality" discus at an acceptable price. Albinos are nice and it's interesting to know that if you breed two albinos, in F1 you don't get any albino but instead you get albino carriers meaning in the F2 line you will get albino discus. It's the time of the year when you get exams and it's rather stressful.

How big (TL) are your discus and how old are they?

The brillant blue turqouise I bought in Feb was about 2'' and now it's around 4".....my first time trying to grow out juvenile discus. It's a lot of work keeping up with the water changes :S

You seem to know a lot about discus.....do you have anything right now? haha

    so beautiful...
but isn't this kind of collection harming natural populations (taking lots of fish out of the ocean when so many populations are on the brink)?

Growing out discus from juvenile is fun but it does need a lot of commitment to grow them out nicely.
    Hmm, maybe xD

These are domestic discus and are not wild. These are freshwater and so they do not belong in the ocean, the wilds belong in the amazon. Even the wilds need to be taken in for collection due to droughts occuring in certain seasons and because of this they would die if left uncollected. Discus are not listed in the CITES, fish like arowana is; not endangered species.

That's really nice but that's a rather large tank (10 gallon) to breed the betta's.
