Only if you watch TVB series, American movies are in avi format or better.

Don't know, I guess the file size came out smaller than avi and people don't want to download an episode in avi format that has a 600mb in size.

I dont understand the resistance to the ".rmvb" format.
pound for pound, rmvb files are clear and better video quality to ANY and I mean ANY video format in existence, Period.
rmvb are much smaller than any other format; so making it the ideal format for uploaders like me.I cant affort to up 100s of GB of videos just for a single 20 episodes series.
Just imagine the size of a 80+ episodes serial.....aaag...

by the way, for me at least, the intermediate format is mpeg2 before being converted to rmvb.

I use ConvertXtoDVD. Depending on your drive speed, it can take a while to convert a file in any format to watch in on your DVD player. RMVB player is the way to go as people have mentioned in this thread. Make sure you get one that also plays mkv with H.264 codec as nearly all mkv are done this way.
Does any one know an RMVB player that supports idx/sub for subtitles? SRT seems to be pretty standrad format for english substitles but the movies on this board are using idx/sub format.

Buy a rmvb player and a portable hard drive. Hook them up to your TV and you are good to go.

Real Video is certainly on of the worst codec out there, real video use an extreme amount of blurring to reduce compression artifacts. Things like facial detail disappear and the effective resolution is greatly reduced. The open source implemantation of mpeg-4/AVC x.264 is far superior to Real Video 10(whose encoder was finalized 4 years ago). There's is absolutely no reason to use RMVB in this day but I'll be honest most American SD rips still uses xvid so it's not just the Hong Kong crowd that resists change. Yet i'll never understand how rmvb is so popular after all it requires either proprietary player or hacked illegal dll to work.

I also use WinAVI to convert those rmvb files to be burned onto DVD media so my parents can watch on their TV. It is not the best software for sure, but you can find free version in the internet (version 8.0 or 9.0).
The best solution is to have a HTPC hooked up to your TV.
