I am not very familiar with the situation until quite recently, around 5, 10 years ago? So by the time I started taking notice of TW policies and such, the policies which dampens its own growth are already in place and running... So not sure about it -mellow The thing is, one can never be sure if China will NOT push the envelope when TW signed the proposal. Once TW is part of China, as SAR or whatnot, international pressure become less intense as it is no longer a matter of foreign affairs... if you know what I mean... "It's China's national policies, to hell with foreign interferences"
yeah ... ur sure about this point .... noo 'gurantee' or whatsuever.... international pressure isn't really having an impact on modern day china (did it every had anyway??)...except for the UN sanctions during korean war...
Especially with China becoming the next super power, the chance of it obliging/giving way to international pressure is infinitestimally slim...
Taiwan was originally apart of China, so i dont see why they shouldnt claim it. I dont think it will be all bad if they did. However I think the US should stay out of it though. They wouldnt bother if they didnt see a way of making profit. And in this situation it would be selling arms to Taiwan.
i think the reaosn why taiwan hates china so much is because of the fact that the ancesters of people living in taiwan were the ones booted out of mainland china. This hatred has spread through the generations to present-time. but yeah, i agree that the Us is only backing taiwan because they wish to stunt china's growth.
I agree that US should stay out of the negotiations, however, I beg to differ to your "I don't think it will be all bad if they (China) did (claim Taiwan)". It is one thing to have a strained relationship, and a very different thing to have war against each other. And the US is KNOWN to be making a profit, not peace, via whatever political intervention they do... So don't think its engagement in the Taiwan-China situtation is of any interest to me. It is after the money its arms can sell...
I think the Chinese and the Taiwanese should maintain relationships as status quo as long as the retarded president Chen Shui Bon and his retarded foreign diplomats don't cause trouble. Chen Shui Bon is retarded in the sense that he wants declare the identity of the Taiwanese as one in which is unique from that of the Chinese Mainland both historically and culturally. For example they changed the name of a lot of names in order to distinguish the sovereignty that is Taiwan like a state run firm on the island that had the words Hua Ren in it to just Taiwan or chaning the Chang Kai Shek memorial hall to Taiwan Hall or something like that. We all know that culturally and heritage wise the Taiwanese are the same if not exactly as some Taiwanese have distant families in provinces across from the strait. And then theres the issue of trying to get diplomatic recognition from other countries. We all know that the U.N. only recognizes one China and the Taiwanese has to play the money game in order to get small and impoverished countries to have diplomatic ties with it instead of the mainland chinese. Also the U.S. under the treaty passed by Congress in the 1970s under Nixon have an obligation to defend the Taiwanese island while recognizing that there is only one China, two system(so it's a double edged sword) but I really don't think that the U.S. shouldn't further antagonize or up the situation by selling weapons to the Taiwanese even if its for defense. Diplomacy should always come first. If the Taiwanese want to move towards formal declaration of independence as a change in their constitution then I think the Chinese should step in otherwise everything should remain as it is.
The problem has ALWAYS been some ambitious politicians who DREAM of ending the status quo and be marked as people (be it Taiwanese or mainland Chinese) hero... =_=bbb It makes perfect sense that diplomacy should come first -worship
Taiwan is a part of China. USA/NATO forces are not going to fight the war for Taiwan, the most they can do is supply them weapons. USA isn't going to wage war on China over Taiwan.
